MLB The Show is currently the top baseball game in today’s video gaming world, with previous titles like Triple Play, MLB 2K, and MVP Baseball taking a back seat. Now, MLB The Show stands as the sole leader among baseball games, offering an unparalleled MLB experience. For the first time since its arrival on Xbox, Sony’s MLB The Show 25 will not be available through Game Pass.
Earlier today, Sony confirmed (noted by observant fans) that MLB The Show 25 will not be available on subscription platforms in the year 2025.
As a tech-savvy fan, I’m excited to share that MLB The Show 25 is set to drop on my gaming console of choice – PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch! Mark your calendars for March 18. However, there’s a twist: in the year 2025, it won’t be part of any platform subscription services.
But wait, there’s more! If you can’t contain your excitement like me, you can get Early Access starting from March 14 – that is, if you grab the Digital Deluxe Edition. So, get ready to swing for the fences!
Opting out of Game Pass might seem unexpected to some, considering that MLB The Show has been consistently breaking player records thanks to its inclusion in the service. In 2023, the game boasted more than six times the number of players on Xbox compared to PlayStation 5. Remarkably, it ranked as the 14th best-selling game of 2023, which could be interpreted as “unfavorable news.
In 2023, MLB The Show was the first Major League Baseball game since 2019 not to rank among the top 10 best-selling games. Despite finishing at the 10th spot on PlayStation, it’s speculated that Sony might be aiming to increase sales by not offering it as part of Game Pass. We’ll see if this decision leads to higher profits for the company, as opposed to the engagement rewards and licensing fees Microsoft would pay for including it in Game Pass.
Game Pass losing MLB The Show is a shame
It’s likely that Game Pass played a significant role in attracting more MLB gamers to Xbox, as it made the game accessible for many users at no additional cost. This has potentially allowed players to spend more money on customizing their ultimate teams by purchasing player packs or individual players directly. The free nature of the game within Game Pass might have increased overall spending. However, we are uncertain about how this impacts the sales of the game itself and whether it could potentially eat into total profits due to cannibalization effects.
As a fan of both Xbox and PlayStation gaming consoles, I found myself leaning towards playing MLB The Show through Game Pass more often than buying it outright. However, I’ve ceased purchasing the game completely. The early access period didn’t hold much appeal for me, so instead, I decided to use the money I saved and take advantage of special launch deals within the game to get a head start on the season.
I’ve often pondered about the thoughts of PlayStation gamers regarding this decision. It’s puzzling why a Sony exclusive game is accessible through a rival’s subscription service rather than on PlayStation Plus. However, their curiosity can now be put to rest as they no longer need to wonder.
This morning’s news has dampened my spirits a bit, as I usually look forward to diving into MLB The Show and challenging my friends. However, it seems that if I want to participate this time, I’ll have to shell out some additional money. Regardless, I am planning to do so, but it’s going to feel strange paying extra for something that has been included in Game Pass for a long time.
