As a cinephile, I can’t help but envision Anna Farris stepping into the shoes of a bumbling character haunted by the Smile Entity in Scary Movie 6. Or perhaps Shawn and Marlon Wayans engaging in a spirited dialogue with a spectral presence, courtesy of a mummified hand from beyond the grave? It seems this could very well be our reality when Scary Movie 6 hits the big screen in 2026. While specifics about the plot remain shrouded in mystery for now, one thing is certain – the upcoming Scary Movie installment will have a wealth of films to draw inspiration from to deliver its signature blend of spoof and satire.
It’s been more than a decade since we last saw a Scary Movie, with the fifth installment gracing our screens in 2013. In that time, several iconic horror movies have emerged, leaving an indelible mark on audiences with their chilling terror. However, this doesn’t mean they are immune to some playful parody, and I for one am eagerly anticipating the delicious satire that Scary Movie 6 promises to serve up.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but notice that while “Scary Movie” shares similarities with “Scream,” it also took aim at other horror classics such as “The Sixth Sense,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and “The Blair Witch Project.” These films were responsible for some of the most spine-tingling moments in late ’90s cinema, even though “The Blair Witch Project” kept its monster shrouded in mystery. Do you recall the first time you saw the “I see dead people” scene from “The Sixth Sense”? It might not have been outright terrifying, but it’s an indelible quote that encapsulates the film, and a ripe target for “Scary Movie” to mock in a side-splitting manner. With another batch of horror movies destined to become instant classics, there’s no reason why the new “Scary Movie” can’t live up to its predecessor’s success.
The Smile Franchise
The chilling saga of filmmaker Parker Finn, titled Smile, delves into the treacherous territory of the destructive power of suppressed pain. In this series, comprising Smile and Smile 2, we follow a harrowing sequence of events that appear almost inescapable. The narrative revolves around various individuals who have had the misfortune to witness a gruesome demise at close range. However, their ordeal doesn’t end with the grisly spectacle; it’s merely the start of their terrifying nightmare. Attendant to each death is an entity known as the Smile Entity. Although its origins are shrouded in mystery, its intent is clear: to inflict maximum suffering.
In 2022, you might recall Smile’s infamous viral marketing stunt. Actors hired for the job would sit at sports events, grinning eerily at cameras while watching the game. It was both amusing and unsettling, much like the Smile movies themselves. The upcoming Scary Movie could effortlessly replicate that unnerving image by having some characters don a chilling smile. Just the sight of a creepy grin can elicit a few jittery chuckles. With the creative talent of The Wayans Family involved, we might be in store for a hilarious masterpiece.
You can stream Smile on Hulu.
Hereditary
If you’ve watched any movie directed by Ari Aster, you’ll recognize his unique ability to swiftly escalate a story from calm to intense within seconds. The film “Hereditary” delves into the sorrowful ordeals of the Graham family, who experience the loss of not one, but two loved ones in quick succession. To add to their misery, an ominous cult seeks to shatter their unity for the sake of performing an ancient rite that will summon Paimon’s return.
In the movie “Hereditary”, there are numerous horror aspects that border on excessive and absurd, causing a slight chuckle; however, this doesn’t detract from the fact that it’s still considered a horror masterpiece. Director Aster has a knack for delving into bizarre elements in his films, resulting in some amusing viewing experiences. For instance, decapitations, cults with a hobby of crafting, and undeniably, headless bodies floating around. These scenes could easily fit into a “Scary Movie” sequel. It’s almost as if mocking “Hereditary” might provide relief for the actors from “Scary Movie”. Toni Collette herself admits that working on “Hereditary” was actually beneficial for her mentally.

Oddity
In his short filmography, Damian Mc Carthy has made a significant impact on horror enthusiasts. After his first movie, the critically overlooked Caveat, he released Oddity, a chilling tale that combines terror and peculiarity. The story revolves around Darcy Odello (Gwilym Lee), a blind medium and store owner who continues to mourn the murder of her twin sister, which occurred a year prior. Endowed with her psychic powers and a mysterious wooden chest, Darcy visits her late sister’s residence in an attempt to uncover the truth surrounding her death.
Although not an officially recognized character in the movie, the eerie wooden figure residing within the enigmatic chest is without a doubt the main attraction. This ominous puppet, with its uncanny ability to appear self-aware, has an almost hypnotic effect on viewers, making it hard to look away. Despite being downright chilling, there’s also a touch of humor to this wooden figure – something that makes you chuckle rather than cringe. Imagine a scenario where a haunted wooden man is lurking in your bedroom at midnight; it’s not exactly a comforting thought, but if you had a few well-placed candles handy, it might be an issue easily solved with a dash of wit. Introduce this spooky yet comical character into the latest Scary Movie, and laughter is certain to ensue!
You can stream Oddity on Shudder.
Longlegs
Among all the movies on this list, it’s almost a must for _Longlegs_ to be satirized in _Scary Movie 6_. The movie seems to have an abundance of elements that would fit seamlessly into the _Scary Movie_ series. Directed by Oz Perkins, _Longlegs_ tells the story of FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), who chases a ruthless serial killer who can kill his victims without even moving a muscle. As Harker gets increasingly close to her quarry, she uncovers a possible connection to the killer that not only jeopardizes her investigation but also puts her own life at risk.
Despite being billed as a heart-racing horror, the movie “Longlegs” contains some absurd ideas that are ripe for mockery by the latest installment of “Scary Movie“. The notion of a doll capable of controlling minds and leading to family massacres is almost too entertaining to ignore in a parody. Moreover, Nicolas Cage excels in roles where he can go over-the-top, and “Longlegs” is no exception. This means his characters are brimming with surrealism and raw enthusiasm. If “Scary Movie 6” aims to replicate that same energy, the only remaining question would be: who could you cast to emulate Cage’s infectious zest?
You can rent Longlegs on Amazon Prime.
Talk to Me
In various movies like “The Others” and “Ouija”, the theme of communicating with the otherworldly is prevalent, but few films tackle it quite like “Talk to Me”. This movie revolves around a group of teenagers who stumble upon a peculiar method to summon spirits using an unusual embalmed hand. Once they experience this exhilarating sensation, they find themselves unable to resist. However, when Mia (Sophia Wilde) believes she’s conversing with her deceased mother, she unwittingly invites some terrifying supernatural entities that aim to wreak havoc upon her.
The movie, titled “Talk to Me,” brilliantly expanded on a straightforward idea and didn’t disappoint when it came to building suspense throughout every scene. Although it doesn’t offer anything revolutionary, its eerie atmosphere is quite compelling. Interestingly, the plot twist involving a mummified hand serving as the gateway to communicating with the deceased opens up a plethora of comedic opportunities when introduced into the universe of “Scary Movie.” This addition presents endless possibilities for humor, particularly in the form of characters using the mummified hand to converse with any recently departed souls. The new creative team behind “Scary Movie” will undoubtedly capitalize on these comical prospects.
You can stream Talk to Me on Paramount+.
Skinamarink
In a world filled with movies that gradually build tension, there’s Skinamarink. This film, one of the most divisive in the last quarter-century, has challenged the boundaries of horror cinema. People either admire its avant-garde approach to minimalistic filmmaking or find it frustrating due to its slow pace and unclear visuals that obscure corners and doorways in rooms and hallways. Skinamarink narrates the tale of two siblings who, in the dead of night, discover their father is nowhere to be found. To make matters worse, all exits from their home have mysteriously disappeared, leaving them trapped inside. In this desperate situation, the children must battle isolation and despair as they strive to survive.
As a movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that if you imagine any pair of characters from the Scary Movie series finding themselves in the Skinamarink house, sheer comedic chaos is bound to break loose within moments. You’d better believe that drywall fragments will be flying before the opening credits even finish rolling. In case there isn’t a single door or window left standing, prepare yourself for some rapid-fire improvisation. However, if tranquility and serenity are what you seek, perhaps this eerie, remote house could serve as the perfect sanctuary – a place free from the pressures of the outside world, where you can unwind without a care in the world. No more nagging concerns about work or neighbors. Just some quality time with your favorite shows and a significant drop in your electricity bill. Sounds like a millennial’s utopia to me!
You can stream Skinamarink on Hulu.
Barbarian
If you’ve ever used Airbnb, you might have felt uneasy, as if someone is watching you. Filmmaker Zach Cregger turned this common feeling into a thrilling experience in his 2022 hit movie, Barbarian. The story revolves around Tess (Georgina Campbell), a woman who finds out that the rental home she booked is already occupied by Keith (Bill Skarsgård), an unfamiliar person. Despite her initial hesitation, Tess agrees to stay in the house with Keith, but they quickly realize there are far more terrifying things within the property than just a double booking.
The film titled “Barbarian” consistently challenges and subverts the audience’s assumptions without compromise. This opens up a wealth of possibilities for the upcoming “Scary Movie” to satirize “Barbarian,” an idea that’s almost comically obvious. From the labyrinthine network of caves beneath the house to the colossal, overly protective mutated woman safeguarding them, there are numerous elements in “Barbarian” that blur the boundaries between horror and comedy. Given its adeptness at straddling this line, it’s only fitting for “Scary Movie 6” to draw inspiration from one of the most unexpected hits of 2022.
You can stream Barbarian on Hulu.
