Actor Tom Welling, known for playing Superman in Smallville, was apprehended for driving under the influence early Monday morning in a parking lot of an Arby’s restaurant in Yreka, California, according to TMZ. The police report indicated that his blood alcohol level was 0.08 percent or higher. Further details about the incident were not disclosed. It was mentioned that Welling had posted birthday wishes for his wife, Jessica Rose Lee, on social media earlier on Sunday, before his arrest around midnight on Monday. As of this writing, Welling has not commented on the arrest.
Tom Welling is primarily recognized for his portrayal of Clark Kent in Smallville, a part he played over ten seasons on The WB and The CW, with The CW taking over from The WB after it combined with UPN in 2006. Apart from his Superman/Clark Kent role, Welling has also been seen in another series influenced by DC Comics, Lucifer, where he played Lieutenant Marcus Pierce/Cain during Season 3. More recently, he made an appearance on The CW’s spin-off of Supernatural, The Winchesters. In addition to this, Tom Welling has also starred in the action movie Mafia Wars.
In 2019, Tom Welling returned briefly to the role he played in Smallville. This reappearance took place during The CW’s Arrowverse crossover event titled “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. During this appearance, Welling’s character Clark from Earth-167 was featured and it was shown that he had given up his powers to live a normal life with his family. This means he is no longer affected by Kryptonite. Additionally, Tom Welling’s Smallville co-star, Erica Durance, made an appearance as Lois.
In 2024, Welling stated that after Smallville concluded, he was often invited to join other productions as Clark Kent, but it never felt right because the tone of those shows didn’t align with Clark or Smallville. He further explained that in the crossover event, the Clark we see giving up his powers and starting a family with Lois might not be the same Clark from Smallville due to the multiverse concept.
Welling is Hoping to Reprise His Smallville Role
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the possibility of reprising my Smallville role, even if it’s in an animated form. However, the progress on this project received an unfortunate update back in November, when I disclosed that Warner Bros. hadn’t responded to our pitch for the series my former co-star, Michael Rosenbaum, and I had been working on.
At that point, Welling expressed his desire for things to proceed smoothly. In reality, he couldn’t secure approval from Warner Bros., which is a necessity for us.
Welling stated he wanted everything to run smoothly back then. The truth is, we haven’t managed to get Warner Bros. to agree yet. We require their consent before moving forward.
