As a dedicated enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about Nvidia’s upcoming high-end graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, set to hit shelves at the end of this month. However, it seems that the anticipation is tinged with a hint of concern as retailers and companies are already issuing warnings about potential stock shortages.
Based on WCCFTech reports, MSI, a prominent graphics card manufacturer, has forewarned about potential stock shortages. It appears that this scarcity in GPU supplies is due to miscommunication between Nvidia and its partner firms, such as MSI, who allegedly didn’t receive adequate chip supplies for their custom versions of the graphics cards.
The initial release may encounter shortages, but it’s predicted that GPU inventory will become more consistent around February. However, this doesn’t mean that acquiring the new graphics cards will be easy; rather, the improvement in stock availability is likely to be gradual over time.
Retailers such as Overclockers UK have discussed the scarcity of the new graphics cards, revealing that initial supplies for the RTX 5090 are extremely limited, with only a handful available on release day. In contrast, the RTX 5080 may be more plentiful, though stocks are still expected to vanish swiftly once they hit the shelves.
The team at Overclockers UK anticipates a higher demand for the 40 series than initially expected, however, due to its release close to Chinese New Year and numerous rumors causing initial supply shortages. Consequently, the stock available will be sold through our webshop immediately upon launch, but I must warn you that it’s likely to sell out extremely quickly, within seconds or minutes at most.
We plan to control the number of pre-orders we accept. While we’ll certainly take some pre-orders, we won’t be taking thousands. This is to guarantee our customers a reasonable expectation and prevent them from having to wait for months.
It’s uncertain at the moment how this situation might affect GPUs and their costs, but considering past events, there’s a strong possibility that scalping will occur, inflating prices significantly. This means that even the $999 RTX 5080 and the $1,999 RTX 5090 may be sold by scalpers at prices far exceeding their actual value. A similar scenario unfolded in 2021 during the cryptocurrency surge when Nvidia launched its RTX 3000-series graphics cards, and scalping became prevalent.
In simpler terms, Nvidia, through their official announcement, shared plans to increase the supply of their upcoming graphics cards to resellers. This move is intended to address the current scarcity of these products in the market.
According to the statement, we anticipate a high demand for both the GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 models. It’s possible that these graphics cards might become out of stock due to such high demand. To help gamers get their hands on these GPUs as soon as possible, NVIDIA and our partners are continuously sending additional stocks to retail stores daily.
During CES 2025 this past month, we saw the introduction of not only the GeForce RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti graphics cards but also the highly anticipated RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 models.
