Instead of merely remastering the initial Resident Evil trilogy for PC, GOG is pushing boundaries by also releasing updated versions of Capcom’s timeless games, Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2, on PC as well, available immediately.
1999 saw the release of Dino Crisis, a survival horror game that rivaled the fear factor of Capcom’s popular Resident Evil series for PlayStation 1. It was known for its ominous sci-fi setting, demanding resource management, and unpredictable dinosaur adversaries that could attack at any moment.
The sequel, Dino Crisis 2, adopted a full-fledged action-shooter style and was adored by fans (including myself) for its excessive gunplay and thrilling action scenes. Some believe that Dino Crisis 2 paved the way for the action-packed direction the Resident Evil series took when Resident Evil 4 was released on the Nintendo Gamecube in 2005.
For years, fans have been imploring Capcom to resurrect the Dino Crisis series, along with other Capcom IP they feel deserve another chance. However, these appeals seem to fall on deaf ears. Now, GOG has taken matters into their own hands by reintroducing Dino Crisis themselves. They’re doing this by re-releasing the first two games on PC, enhancing them with numerous upgrades to ensure they run smoothly on contemporary computer systems. Additionally, these versions will be free of Digital Rights Management (DRM).
These improvements for each respective game (as stated on GOG’s official website) are:
Dino Crisis improvements
- Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11
- All 6 localizations of the game included (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese)
- Original, Arrange, and Operation Wipe Out modes included
- Improved DirectX game renderer
- New rendering options (Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization Control, Gamma Correction, Integer Scaling, Anti-Aliasing, and more)
- Increased rendering resolution to ~4K (1920p) and color depth to 32-bit.

- Improved alpha transparency

- Issue-free saving (the game no longer corrupts save files after leaving dropped weapons)
- Full support for modern controllers (Sony DualSense, Sony DualShock4, Microsoft Xbox Series, Microsoft Xbox One, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Logitech F series and many more) with optimal button binding regardless of the hardware, hotplugging and wireless mode
Dino Crisis 2 improvements
- Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11
- All 2 localizations of the game included (English, Japanese)
- Easy difficulty, Dino Colosseum and Dino Duel included
- Improved DirectX game renderer
- New rendering options (Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization Control, Gamma Correction, Integer Scaling, Anti-Aliasing and more)
- Improved music playback and volume scaling
- Improved item rendering and fogging
- Improved cartridge boxes alignment
- Issue-free video playback, task switching and game exit
- Full support for modern controllers (Sony DualSense, Sony DualShock4, Microsoft Xbox Series, Microsoft Xbox One, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Logitech F series and many more) with optimal button binding regardless of the hardware and wireless mode
Furthermore, Good Old Games (GOG) has unveiled the creation of the GOG Dreamlist, an interactive platform for gaming enthusiasts to express their preferences on which retro, vintage games they’d like to see revived next as part of GOG’s mission to preserve old video games from fading into oblivion.
If Capcom won’t bring Dino Crisis back, then GOG will do itself
Although Dino Crisis wasn’t part of my childhood gaming experience, as I found myself more drawn to the action-packed Dino Crisis 2, it’s clear why fans hold this classic in such high regard. It brims with innovative concepts that could be further developed and fully realized with a next-generation remake using the RE Engine, similar to how Resident Evil’s remake series has given rise to some of the finest Xbox and PC games from the last ten years.
It seems that the prospect of Dino Crisis returning is becoming more likely these days, given that Capcom announced at The 2024 Game Awards their intention to revive both Okami and Onimusha franchises. With Good Old Games (GOG) re-releasing Dino Crisis 1 and 2 on PC, fans now have a greater opportunity to express their desire for the franchise’s return through their wallets by demonstrating the amount they are willing to spend.
