His journey began in 2009 with the debut of the Attack on Titan manga penned by Hajime Isayama, and since then, the franchise has expanded into various forms of media, including numerous video games, spin-offs, and additional content.
For a novice or even someone re-entering the fray, finding a starting point in the expansive universe of Attack on Titan can be challenging. Indeed, at first glance, it may appear approachable; however, its depth and complexity are not immediately apparent.
When diving into the captivating world of Attack on Titan, it’s essential to remember that while the main series is generally easy to follow along with, there are some OVAs (Original Video Animations), spin-offs, and other content that might leave you scratching your head about the order in which to watch them. As a fellow fan, I’d suggest taking a moment to familiarize yourself with their chronology to ensure an immersive and enjoyable viewing experience!

What makes Attack on Titan stand out among other anime series is that unlike many others, such as Naruto which has hundreds of filler episodes you can afford to miss, every single episode in the main storyline of Attack on Titan is essential and worth watching.
In almost every instance, whether it’s a scene or a fleeting moment, turns out to be significant in some manner, sometimes only becoming clear to us much later on.
While not essential, the OVAs offer an intriguing perspective and consistently contribute fresh elements to the broader storyline.
The OVAs may not be vital, but they’re still fascinating and enrich the overall plot with unique aspects.

The film titled “The Last Attack,” based on the last episodes of the final season of Attack on Titan, offers a big-screen experience. While dedicated fans will likely want to see it, those who merely wish to complete the season without delay should be aware that watching this movie isn’t necessary.
The final ever part of Attack on Titan arrived on 5th November 2023 at midnight in Japan.
Previously, fans speculated if the anime might have a distinct conclusion compared to the manga. As Isayama concluded the manga in 2021, the ending sparked intense debate among fans, leading Isayama himself to post a public statement addressing their emotional reactions on his Instagram account.
In my observation, the conclusion of Attack on Titan stirred up a lot of discussion – and I’m ready to listen to your genuine thoughts about it. Kindness, though, is always appreciated as we share our perspectives.
Essentially, Isayama and Studio MAPPA carried on in the same vein from the beginning of the series: after wrapping up the manga storyline, they included unique anime sequences and refined the dialogue slightly to make the final outcome even more impactful compared to the original ending.
In revisiting his work, Isayama had an opportunity to refine certain aspects that he expressed dissatisfaction with initially. This included adding nuances like Armin not labeling Eren as a mass murderer, and providing a deeper emotional context to their discussion on Mikasa’s character.
Despite sharing the same heart-wrenching ending as in the manga, witnessing the fated tragic love story between Mikasa and Eren unfold with its inevitable outcome – one’s life sacrificed for the other – is all the more heartbreaking. In a difficult decision for the greater good, Mikasa chose to end Eren’s life.
We’ve added Attack on Titan: Junior High to the mix, which is a popular spin-off. Some people might find its humor, being a parody of the original series, a bit too jarring when it first came out. So, you may choose to pass on this one if you prefer a more traditional approach.
In our analysis, we’ve excluded the anime movies that fall within the seasons as they essentially serve as recaps, offering repetitive content. To fully appreciate the series, it’s important to watch each episode individually, as they contain crucial details that enrich your understanding of the storyline.
Once more, this is a frequent occurrence in anime series, as the Demon Slayer season 3 film has faced criticism for including excessive recaps from season 2.
Moreover, we have Shinji Higuchi’s live-action film adaptation of Attack on Titan that deviated significantly from the original work. When it was unveiled in 2015, the reception among Japanese viewers was far from enthusiastic.
Given its critical reception with a score of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and a lower audience rating of 34%, it seems highly improbable that a sequel will be made. For this reason, we’ve chosen not to include it in our suggested viewing sequence.
