How Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Revamps the MCU and Redefines the Hero

One of the major discussions preceding the release of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” was its relationship with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Originally named “Spider-Man: Freshman Year“, this animated series aimed to delve into Spider-Man’s backstory before he joined the fray in “Captain America: Civil War“. What made “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” stand out was that it was Marvel Studio’s first foray into creating an animated Spider-Man series. Given any project with a tenuous link to the MCU is worth noting, the interest in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” heightened even further when considering its departure from the MCU timeline.

SPOILER ALERT: The following discussion contains spoilers for Episode 1 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

In a distinct turn of events, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man diverges from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline that fans have been following on both big and small screens. The twist lies in the fact that some characters stay consistent while entirely new ones emerge, never seen within the MCU before. This not only gives Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man a unique identity apart from the MCU, but also paves the way for new and exciting storylines. This change is beneficial because it provides a much-needed boost to Spider-Man within the MCU.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man gets a visit from Doctor Strange

On his inaugural day at Midtown High School, Peter Parker encounters a disastrous turn when the school is assaulted by a colossal, ominous beast. Since he doesn’t possess his Spider-Man powers yet, Peter can only watch in despair as this gigantic creature attempts to cause chaos. Fortunately, Doctor Strange arrives to save the day through a portal. In contrast to the main MCU timeline where Spider-Man and Doctor Strange didn’t meet until Avengers: Infinity War, in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, an alien battle with Doctor Strange brings him directly to Spider-Man’s doorstep.

In the rephrased version: The battle between Doctor Strange and an “alien symbiote” (as seen in the subtitles) devastates Midtown High School. Unlike Benedict Cumberbatch, Robin Atkins Downes provides the voice for the Sorcerer Supreme in this scenario. This confrontation is known as the “Nexus Event,” which separates Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s chronology, but it isn’t the only occurrence where things diverge from the usual path.

Norman Osborn replaces Tony Stark as Spider-Man’s mentor

In the movie “Captain America: Civil War”, Iron Man enlists Spider-Man to join him against Captain America and the Avengers who are violating the Sokovia Accords. Tony Stark unexpectedly shows up at Peter Parker’s apartment in Queens, sitting on the couch next to his Aunt May. This scenario is reminiscent of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, where a similar sequence of events unfolds, culminating in Peter Parker discovering a VCR player in the trash. As he enters his apartment, Peter is taken aback to find Norman Osborn waiting for him instead.

Fans of Spider-Man have long anticipated Norman Osborn’s appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Willem Dafoe reprised his role as Norman Osborn, however, Dafoe’s Green Goblin originated from a different universe. The MCU version of Norman Osborn has yet to make an appearance. Although Colman Domingo voices the iconic Spider-Man villain, it’s important to note that “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is not officially part of the MCU. We’ll have to wait and see how the first season unfolds for Peter Parker and Norman Osborn’s storyline in the MCU.

In a contrasting manner, Iron Man adopted a detached approach when mentoring Spider-Man; however, it’s uncertain if Norman Osborn will follow suit. Historically, they’ve clashed in the comics, but recent plot twists have seen them joining forces against a common enemy. Although this alliance is likely temporary, it offers a fresh perspective on Spider-Man’s backstory.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s MCU changes are for the best

In contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) versions of Spider-Man, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” stands apart due to one significant difference: Spidey’s independence from Iron Man. A common criticism towards Spider-Man in the MCU was his excessive reliance on Iron Man for suits and validation, even when it came to earning a place among the Avengers. However, this wasn’t always the case in the comics where Spider-Man, known previously as a loner, didn’t join the Avengers until more recently over the past few decades. The MCU altered this dynamic, which while pleasing most fans, also sparked a desire among some for the classic Spidey solo days to return.

By staying independent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the creators of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” enjoy the flexibility to weave their own narratives without needing approval from Marvel Studios. This independence means they can delve into stories involving characters like Norman Osborn, without worrying about who will portray him in live-action or how the story of Spider-Man will continue as shaped by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. Ultimately, it’s the fans who benefit, as “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” embarks on a fresh journey for the iconic wall-crawler.
