Melanie Walters Opens Up About Surprise Romance Twist in Gavin & Stacey Finale!

Apart from the anticipation surrounding whether Nessa and Smithy would ultimately end up together in the last episode of Gavin & Stacey, viewers of the sitcom were also given an unexpected twist when it emerged that Stacey’s mother, Gwen, was developing a romantic interest as well.

Over the Christmas broadcasts, there was an unexpected revelation: Gwen (played by Melanie Walters) had been involved romantically with Dave Coaches (portrayed by Steffan Rhodri). This twist took many viewers by surprise.

But did Walters?

As Chris Gernon, our exceptional director, had hinted beforehand, I found myself not entirely surprised when I delved into the piece. Yet, it’s important to clarify that Chris didn’t disclose specific details to me.

Walters went on to explain: “She had already read the script before I even received it. But she promised not to reveal anything. However, she hinted, ‘There’s a moment where you will… there will be a time when you will scream.’ And indeed, that’s exactly what happened, I did scream at that point.

I was completely clueless about it. Isn’t that fascinating? It certainly is. It was quite unexpected. In fact, I had heard rumors suggesting it might be Pete. Did you catch that as well?

“Anyway, amazing storyline. I’m really blessed to have such a good storyline in the finale.”

For quite some time now, Dave Coaches, a well-known figure, has graced our screens in the comedy series. He was actually supposed to marry Nessa (played by Ruth Jones), but their plans were put on hold as they both confessed that they weren’t deeply in love with each other.

Apart from Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Jason (Robert Wilfort,) Dave is the only other person privy to the events that unfolded during the enigmatic fishing expedition from long ago.

Since Bryn isn’t particularly fond of Dave, it takes him some time to accept Dave, especially after discovering Gwen and Dave’s relationship in the amusing last episode.

To ensure a more comfortable journey, I opted for a personal car ride instead of sharing with Dave on his coach, all the way to London. Thankfully, it seemed our disagreement was resolved in the end.

After the final episode concluded in a satisfying manner, viewers couldn’t help but wonder if there might be additional content available.

The creators of the series, James Corden and Ruth Jones, mentioned that they cannot produce additional episodes of Gavin & Stacey since it’s unrealistic to portray Nessa and Smithy living together on screen.

Reflecting on the final episode of Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell, Jones commented: “With Smithy and Nessa becoming a couple, their story seems to reach its conclusion. Since it’s unlikely we’ll ever witness them cohabiting in reality.

Corden added: “No, it just won’t work.”
