As a passionate movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share that Dan Fogelman, the Emmy-nominated genius behind shows like “This Is Us” and “Only Murders in the Building,” has confidently declared his vision for the captivating series “Paradise.” If Hulu decides to renew it, the story is planned to unfold across an impressive three seasons!
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fogelman revealed that he initially developed the pilot’s concept but took time to delve deeper into the intricacies of the show. He shared his ideas about the premise and the show’s future direction with a few trusted confidants after drafting the script for the first episode.
However, Fogelman admitted that he was uncertain about where the story would go beyond the initial idea. It wasn’t until he collaborated with John Hoberg and Scott Weinger, both talented writers and producers on “Paradise,” and his producing partner, that he found his path forward.
To ensure authenticity, Fogelman spent three weeks engaging with experts from various fields to gain valuable insights that would enrich the storytelling in “Paradise.” Now, with a clear vision in hand, this talented creator is ready to take us on an unforgettable journey through the captivating world of “Paradise”!
Following three weeks, he declared, ‘Now I’m clear about what I want to accomplish.’ He continued, ‘I’ve decided on a three-season series, I have a sense of its direction. I’ll tweak the initial episode slightly and then present it to those who might be interested in producing it. While I didn’t have every detail planned when I wrote it, by the time the first script was distributed, I knew where the story was heading. After that, you gather a talented writing team who fill in the gaps of what I hadn’t figured out yet.’
[Warning: SPOILERS for Paradise Episode 1 Follow!]
In “Paradise,” Sterling K. Brown portrays Secret Service Agent Xavier Collins, assigned to safeguard President Cal Bradford (James Marsden). Initially, the series presents a gripping political drama with a nonlinear narrative, interweaving past and present events. However, an unexpected twist towards the end of the premiere transforms this story into a sci-fi tale. Viewers anticipating the identity of President Bradford’s killer were left bewildered when they discovered that in the present day, our characters inhabit a vast underground city hidden beneath the Colorado mountains. It’s disclosed that due to his bravery and sacrifice, Agent Xavier was granted exclusive security clearance by President Bradford, allowing him access to a massive bunker built as an escape from an impending global catastrophe on Earth.
When inquired about whether the underworld city of Paradise might venture into the rumored wreckage beyond, Fogelman tactfully evaded a direct response, instead tantalizing fans with hints regarding the series’ intriguing narrative setup.
He shared his vision for the TV series spanning across three seasons. He cautioned not to reveal too many details, but each season will have its unique elements while maintaining continuity with the same characters. The opening episode sets up a mystery that unfolds throughout the season, with unexpected twists and turns along the way. The seventh episode is particularly notable as it stands alone within the series. As we move into the second season, there’s a slight shift in direction, but one that he believes will be easy to follow. However, there are significant developments yet to come.
Fogelman stated, “At the conclusion of the initial season, I find it frustrating when TV series entice and leave you in suspense with unexpected twists, only to not deliver answers during the first break. Instead, my aim is to serve a full meal within each episode for those who have invested their time. Any queries raised during the early episodes should be addressed by the end of the eighth episode. This way, we can move on to posing and embarking on a new question and journey that leads us into the second season.
In “Paradise,” Fogelman and Brown reunite as Fogelman is the creator of the critically acclaimed NBC drama series “This Is Us,” where Brown starred and won his first Golden Globe for portraying Randall Pearson. He also earned his second Emmy Award, with the first one coming from playing Christopher Darden in “American Crime Story.” Interestingly, Fogelman didn’t specifically envision Brown while writing “Paradise,” but when the series was essentially given the go-ahead, Brown emerged as the ideal candidate. If Brown, who also serves as an executive producer for the series, had declined the project, Fogelman might not have pursued “Paradise.
Fogelman admitted to harboring some apprehension when considering proposing another TV show idea to Sterling. He didn’t want to cause discomfort or put him in a position where he’d have to decline something I was working on. Sterling, after all, had plenty of opportunities as an actor. However, I still sent the idea over, and as people were offering their thoughts, I found myself visualizing Sterling in the role. If he declined (which I anticipated due to his busy schedule), I thought I might not go ahead with the project. But then, to my surprise, Sterling called me that night and agreed to be part of it, and we promptly started working on it.
You can watch the initial three installments of “Paradise” right now. Fresh episodes will be available each Tuesday on Hulu.
