BioWare has shared that they are reducing their workforce and transferring several employees to different teams within EA as part of an effort to simplify their tasks, given the change in focus towards the upcoming Mass Effect installment. Since the studio is no longer engaged in developing two RPGs concurrently following the release of Dragon Age: Veilguard, they are currently transitioning between development phases, which explains why a large team isn’t necessary at this time.
As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share some inside scoop! In a recent blog post, our General Manager Gary McKay revealed that the ongoing restructuring is focused on maintaining “our commitment to exceptional quality.” Notably, a dedicated core team, boasting veterans from the original Mass Effect trilogy, is currently hard at work on the upcoming game. This talented group includes industry veterans like Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and more. We can’t wait to see what they create!
McKay goes on to discuss the early phase the RPG is in: “Since we’re still in this developmental stage, we don’t necessarily need assistance from the entire studio right now. We’ve got a wealth of talent here at BioWare, so we’ve been proactive in pairing many of our team members with other EA teams that have open positions that suit them well.
Through shrinking operations, BioWare aims to transform into a nimble and concentrated studio dedicated to crafting remarkable role-playing games, as they prepare for the development of the next Mass Effect installment.
Originally unveiled towards the end of 2020, this project has recently taken center stage for BioWare, having spent the previous years completing Dragon Age: The Veilguard. This game transitioned from a live-service endeavor to a single-player RPG entirely. Since the project is still in its early stages, it’s not unexpected that the next Mass Effect might not launch until the release of PS6’s next generation.
