In the current storylines of both “Superman” and “Action Comics”, an unusual twist has emerged in Superman’s conflict with Lex Luthor. Since the commencement of the latest “Superman” series, Lex Luthor, despite being imprisoned, has been working alongside Superman to assist him as much as he could. This unusual alliance culminated in LexCorp transforming into SuperCorp to aid the Man of Steel. Last year’s “House of Brainiac” story arc saw Brainiac capturing Lex Luthor, ending with Lex losing his memory. Since then, Lex has been acting differently, helping SuperCorp and his daughter Lena, while also developing feelings for Mercy Graves, his long-time assistant. However, it remains to be seen if this is a genuine change in Lex or just a temporary facade.
Issue #1 of “Superman: Lex Luthor Special” penned by Joshua Williamson and Eddy Barrows, delves into the enigma surrounding Lex Luthor’s amnesia. The narrative takes an unexpected turn, one that is said to intertwine with Dan Slott’s forthcoming “Superman Unlimited”, while also shedding light on a pivotal moment from Luthor’s childhood. This event underscores the deep connection between Luthor and Superman, a bond forged over nearly their entire lives.
Lex Luthor’s Genius Made a Huge Difference in Baby Superman’s Life
In this scenario, amnesiac Lex receives a piano from Lena, who recalls Lex’s mother mentioning his past piano lessons. Lena hopes the piano will trigger Lex’s memories, and it appears to work: Lex recalls his piano lessons, as well as his father Lionel’s anger at him playing music. Despite his mother’s efforts to calm Lionel, Lex is deeply affected by his father’s outbursts, crying profusely. This instance stands out as a significant one, since until now, Lex’s memory has been completely blank. However, being the secretive individual that he is, Lex conceals from Lena that he remembers anything.
In the subsequent flashback sequence, we find Lex and Lionel in Smallville. Lionel urgently pushes young Lex to complete their task at hand. As a pair of parents with a distressed child pass by, Lionel becomes irritated by the baby’s cries. He queries Lex about why they had to venture into the city, to which Lex explains that he had conceived an idea for an invention – one capable of broadcasting music into space. He required a radio transmitter, and so they came downtown. To his father’s surprise, he reveals that he is crafting this device specifically for Lionel. Instead of expressing delight at his son’s creativity, however, Lionel reacts with fury over Lex’s intelligence; it should be noted that Lionel Luthor harbors resentment towards his son due to Lex being more intelligent than him.
In the concluding memory scene of the comic, young Lex flees from home amidst arguments between his parents about him. Lionel asserts that no child could have built such a machine as Lex did and they must never let him depart their property again. As Lex sprints across the field, he eventually reaches an open space and rests beneath the moonlight. Dejectedly, Lex activates his invention, broadcasting music into deep space. Yet, someone far more proximate picks up the melody.
It is disclosed that the distraught parents tending to the wailing infant are Clark and Martha Kent. Baby Superman, later known as Clark Kent, has been inconsolable, crying around the clock. The Kents are at a loss about how to soothe the baby and are too afraid to take him to the doctor for fear of revealing his non-human nature. However, an unexpected incident occurs. Music from Lex Luthor plays softly, undetectable by Jon and Martha, but soothing to the baby. At last, the infant Clark quiets down and falls asleep. Overwhelmed, the Kents declare it a miraculous occurrence. Meanwhile, young Lex Luthor is alone in the field, his countenance dejected, unaware of the joy he has brought to the Kents and the future adversary he would unknowingly create.
Superman: Lex Luthor Special #1 Shows the Tragedy of Lex Luthor’s Life
The lives of Superman and Lex Luthor have frequently been contrasted like two mirrored images. While the Kents adored young Clark unconditionally, young Lex Luthor’s existence was markedly distinct: his mother cherished him, but his father was a cruel and abusive figure, stirring within Lex a deep sense of inadequacy that was amplified by his extraordinary intellect. This disparity in their upbringings is highlighted in this narrative, as baby Clark is pampered by his parents, desperate for him to quiet down and sleep peacefully, while Lex’s father reacts with fury when Lex presents him a gift. This chilling portrayal of Lex Luthor’s troubled early years serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact those experiences had on shaping him into the man he ultimately became.
Superman: Lex Luthor Special #1″ is one of two standalone stories featuring Lex Luthor this week, and effectively advances his ongoing narrative. As often suggested, if Lex Luthor genuinely cared for humanity as much as he claims, he could have devised means to aid the planet. This comic reveals a time when young Lex aimed to invent solutions for people’s problems. The main storyline – which involves Mr. Terrific questioning Superman about Lex’s ability to construct a device for communicating with an alternate Earth from DC’s Absolute Universe – is further contextualized by this glimpse into Lex’s formative years, shedding light on the tragic events that shaped him into the villain he eventually became. It’s deeply moving to contemplate what Lex could have achieved with a better upbringing.
