Hudson Thames, the voice actor for Marvel Studios’ newest animated Spider-Man in Disney+’s series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, disclosed that he intentionally decided against modeling his performance after Tom Holland‘s acclaimed portrayal of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an exclusive chat with ComicBook, Thames delved into his original approach to voicing Peter Parker for the animated series, which debuted with two episodes on Disney+ this week. Previously known for voicing Spider-Man in the “What If…?” episode “What If… Zombies?”, Thames also clarified how the show’s divergence from MCU continuity enabled him to develop a fresh take on the famous superhero. In his own words, Thames aimed to provide Marvel Cinematic Universe fans with a new spin on the teenage hero rather than rehashing ideas already presented in the primary timeline.
Thames expressed during our exclusive chat that he faced a choice between attempting to mimic something well-known or embarking on a new journey. He discussed this with Marvel, but ultimately found his motivation within himself. Initially, he thought about revisiting old Spider-Man movies and ‘No Way Home’, all of which he had previously watched. However, he realized that remembering what it felt like to be in high school, where everything was significant and life-altering, was a more valuable guide for him. Delving into his youthful experiences became an essential source of inspiration.
For Thames, realizing that his character’s journey would stand independently in its own timeline, instead of being a direct prequel to the MCU’s Spider-Man, was a liberating experience. He admitted that he initially felt apprehensive about not wanting to disrupt what Tom Holland had already established with his popular portrayal. However, this creative freedom enabled him to concentrate on portraying the relatable experiences of teenage life rather than attempting to replicate an existing performance.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Puts a Fresh Spin on Marvel’s Iconic Hero
This newly released animated series, titled Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, signifies Marvel Studios’ fresh foray into animation after X-Men ’97. Notably, it deviates from the conventional Spider-Man narrative by depicting a scenario where Norman Osborn (Colman Domingo) acts as Peter Parker’s mentor instead of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), in an alternate timeline. As it is not bound by the franchise’s primary continuity, this series has the freedom to introduce diverse characters and weave new tales, rather than being confined by canon concerns.
The dedication shown by Thames in crafting a unique voice for Peter Parker while preserving the beloved essence of Spider-Man underscores how the character can grow while remaining faithful to its fundamental themes. This portrayal is set to introduce something novel to the role, all the while paying tribute to what makes Spider-Man universally appealing across various age groups. Given that Marvel Studios has renewed the series for a third season, it’s evident they have faith in this innovative take on the animated escapades of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The authentic and youth-oriented portrayal of Peter Parker by Thames seems to be an integral factor contributing to its success.
Right now, you can catch the initial installments of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” on Disney+. Fresh episodes arrive each Wednesday.
