In an exciting development for fans of classic Cartoon Network shows, Adult Swim is planning to re-air some of the network’s rarest programs on television through a revamp of its Checkered Past block. Over the past few years, Adult Swim has been expanding its schedule within Cartoon Network, giving us more opportunities to see beloved series like King of the Hill and many others return to our screens. As part of this expansion, Adult Swim is now going even further by helping to commemorate one of the most significant periods in Cartoon Network’s history.
On weekdays, I’m witnessing the revival of cherished classics from the 2000s era on the Checkered Past block, curated by Adult Swim. Shows like “Courage the Cowardly Dog,” which have been off the air for a while, are making a comeback here. Things are getting even more exciting as we approach next month, when there’ll be an update to the Checkered Past schedule. As I’ve learned from @Swimpedia on X, starting in February, we’ll also see the pilot episodes of Cartoon Network classics that didn’t quite make it to full production airing alongside Checkered Past.
Based on the AdultSwim programming schedule, Cartoon Network shows are set to officially air on Checkered Past starting on Monday, February 17th!
Here’s a rundown of the initial lineup:
– “Uncle Gus: For the Love of Monkeys”
– “Uncle Gus: Not So Fast!”
– “Major Flake: Soggy Sale”
– “IMP, Inc.”
– “King Crab: Space Crustacean— Swimpedia (@swimpedia) January 28, 2025

In the 2000s, I witnessed the monumental impact of Cartoon Cartoons on Cartoon Network. It served as a launchpad for many original shows and creators, paving their path to success. This block featured pilot episodes, and remarkably, viewers even had the chance to vote on some of these pilots, which could later lead to full series orders. While What a Cartoon! show might be more familiar to fans due to this initiative, the shorts that preceded them are even scarcer, as they never fully materialized from these initial pilots. In fact, last year, What a Cartoon! made a comeback in a limited run on Checkered Past.
You Should Watch Checkered Past
The fact that Checkered Past has been a huge hit for Adult Swim since its launch in 2023, really emphasizes how you should tune in. This nostalgia-focused block not only revived the popularity of shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and Cow and Chicken, which had minimal support outside of Boomerang, but also brought back some of Cartoon Network’s rarer shows such as What a Cartoon! And now, even the pilots from the Cartoon Cartoons series are making a comeback on TV.
In a delightful throwback to the iconic Cartoon Cartoons era that dominated Cartoon Network in the early 2000s, they’ve introduced a mini revival. As the network moves forward into a new phase for its animated series, Checkered Past serves as a tribute to the network’s rich history for those who seek it out. So far, the block has been trimmed down to an hour at the beginning of the year, but if there’s increased demand for these less common gems, we might see more changes in the future.
