It’s not common to see ads for smaller films during the Super Bowl because of the high cost of advertising. In 2023, a 30-second ad cost $7 million, meaning a minute-long spot would cost twice as much. This is a significant expense that can strain a marketing budget, so studios typically only advertise movies they’re confident will be successful. The types of movies shown during the Super Bowl are usually those scheduled for release over the summer, with some exceptions like last year when The Fall Guy, IF, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes were featured, all of which premiered in May. Inside Out 2 also got an ad in June. Advertisements for movies that premiered after July, such as those from August, September, or October, are not typically shown during the Super Bowl.
Occasionally, unexpected surprises are thrown into the mix, usually for a movie scheduled to hit theaters around a month or six weeks after a game. Last year it was the April release of “Monkey Man.” It’s quite uncommon to see trailers for movies releasing in the last quarter of the year. If one does appear, it will likely be a sneak peek, like last year for “Wicked.” Will there be exceptions such as those this year? We’ll find out when Super Bowl LIX is broadcast on Sunday, February 9.
Expect These Summer Blockbusters
Similar to how each year offers fresh Marvel Cinematic Universe stories with the release of new movies, each Super Bowl brings at least one sneak peek of those tales. This year, the potential contender is “Captain America: Brave New World“. The film, starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, is set to premiere just five days after the game’s broadcast, and given its recent positive reception, Disney will likely leverage this momentum. Additionally, there’s a strong chance for the release of “Thunderbolts*“, which, like “Brave New World“, already has a trailer available. However, it could undoubtedly gain from a promotion during Super Bowl LIX .
A forthcoming Disney production that may unveil a sneak peek or preview during the game is none other than Snow White. Similar to Captain America: Brave New World, which has been plagued with early criticisms about unsatisfactory test screenings and reshoot issues, as well as recent controversies, Snow White has also garnered some pre-release flak. This movie could greatly benefit from a powerful Super Bowl advertisement slot, as the trailer released in December elicited more shrugs than applause. There’s another live-action reimagining of a classic Disney animation, Lilo & Stitch. The film already has an adorable teaser online, but the Super Bowl could be the ideal venue to unveil a 2-minute trailer.
A forthcoming movie, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” is expected to air its trailer during the upcoming big event, even though some of the footage may be familiar. This comes after the underperformance of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” in 2023, a setback that has likely left Paramount anxious about history repeating itself with the final installment. However, “Dead Reckoning” was competing against heavyweights like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” Moreover, it’s an outstanding film, as its reputation suggests. Despite “Dead Reckoning” falling short financially, “Final Reckoning” still has a strong chance to succeed, and it’s almost guaranteed to get at least a sneak peek during the game.
Among the 2025 films yet to reveal a teaser or full trailer, there’s a strong possibility that “Jurassic World: Rebirth” will make its debut during Super Bowl LIX. Given its July release date, it’s close to the limit for movies shown in Super Bowl advertisements, but this is a boundary frequently tested (as with the examples given: “Deadpool & Wolverine”). According to recent reports from Deadline, not only are Universal Pictures planning to unveil a sneak peek of Jurassic World: Rebirth during the game, but they will also premiere a new trailer for the live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon,” which is set to release on June 13.
Potential Longshot Predictions
In terms of promotions for the movie “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” there’s been relatively little so far, aside from some spoiler-free artwork. While showing a 30-second spot during the Super Bowl would be ideal, it seems less likely than “Captain America: Brave New World” or “Thunderbolts.” Given that Disney usually advertises only two of their three upcoming movies, it’s questionable whether they’d invest in three MCU ads. There’s speculation that “Fantastic Four” might be included among the advertisements since “Captain America: Brave New World” is currently receiving a lot of promotion. Only time will reveal the truth.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited about Disney’s upcoming film, Tron: Ares. However, with its release scheduled for October, it seems to miss the traditional advertising timeframe around the Super Bowl. Yet, considering that Tron: Legacy didn’t quite live up to expectations back in 2010, it’s understandable that Disney is keen on generating some positive buzz early. A striking Super Bowl commercial could certainly help achieve that goal.
