The Michael Shanks-directed body horror film titled Together has garnered significant attention at Sundance 2025, boasting a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 18 reviews. This movie explores the transformation of a couple’s relationship after they move to the countryside, combining elements of relationship drama and intense body horror in an innovative way. NEON has secured worldwide distribution rights for this film in their festival’s initial significant deal, expanding their collection of genre movies that challenge conventions. In the movie, real-life partners Alison Brie and Dave Franco venture into uncharted territory with physically taxing performances and intense horror scenes that necessitated them to delve into their genuine relationship to create authentic portrayals.
Brie stated in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that this film demanded an unusually close relationship between its main actors compared to anything she’s worked on before. She couldn’t imagine how they could’ve made the movie without a real-life couple due to certain scenarios they encountered. Franco also mentioned that the 21-day shoot resulted in numerous bruises, which he documented through a series of photos. He explained that some scenes required him to contort his body in ways it hadn’t been before, leading to discomfort in unexpected areas.
The film’s investigation into codependency struck a chord with both leading actors. As Brie put it, “Just like any great genre movie, we’re going to take this concept and run with it as far as it can go.” In essence, they’re delving into the question of what happens when a couple reaches a point where they can’t recall whether they still love each other or what originally drew them together. Instead, it becomes a tale of fear – the fear of the unknown, the anxiety about leaving a relationship out of apprehension.
NEON Continues Its Horror Dominance with Together’s Sundance Acquisition
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite production house, NEON, is on a roll! Following an astonishingly successful year in 2024, they’ve continued their dominance in the horror genre with their latest acquisition of the chilling film, Together. This remarkable expansion has been fueled by the immense success of their supernatural thriller, Longlegs, which not only became NEON’s highest-grossing release but also the highest-grossing independent film of 2024, raking in an impressive $126.9 million worldwide ($74.3 million domestic).
The movie received a staggering amount of critical acclaim, boasting an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 308 reviews. Moreover, the religious horror masterpiece by Sydney Sweeney, Immaculate, added to their winning streak with a worldwide gross of $35.3 million and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 71%. Lastly, their avant-garde horror film, Cuckoo, was applauded for its groundbreaking direction and captivating performances by Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens, maintaining a fresh rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Simply put, NEON is setting the standard in the horror genre, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store next!
At this year’s Sundance Film Festival 2025, the distributor bought the film “Together”, following the festival’s impressive history of debuting revolutionary horror movies. For over a decade, the Midnight section of Sundance has unveiled game-changing films in the genre, such as Robert Eggers’ “The Witch” (2015), Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” (2017), and Ari Aster’s “Hereditary” (2018). Recent triumphs include “Talk to Me” (2023) and the upcoming innovative entries like the “ambient slasher” movie “In a Violent Nature“. NEON’s approach of discovering distinctive horror concepts resonates well with Sundance’s legacy of showcasing movies that advance the genre.
Together opens in theaters on August 1, 2025.
