The animated series, based on a novel penned by Natsu Hyūga and beautifully illustrated by Touko Shino in 2011, narrates the story of a young girl named Maomao.
Previously, she had a job at a pharmacy located within the notorious red-light district. However, some trouble broke out, leading to her being abducted and forced into working as a servant under contract for an extended period at the Imperial Palace.
Rather than retaliating with strength, Maomao chooses to remain composed and persist in her duties at the palace instead.
But then, a sudden calamity arises as a baffling sickness targets the emperor’s concubines and offspring. Through her skills learned at the apothecary, Maomao steps in unnoticed to save the day within the palace walls.
A terrible event unfolds when an enigmatic illness starts affecting the emperor’s concubines and kin. Thanks to her expertise gained from working at the pharmacy, Maomao discreetly intervenes to resolve the crisis within the palace grounds.
Unfortunately for her, she can’t remain hidden for long, and is put to work to solve mysteries.
