Netflix recently shared some updates that combined elements of anticipation and letdown for its subscribers during their latest content unveiling. On one hand, they confirmed that both the final seasons of “Squid Game” and “Stranger Things” are set to release this year, as well as fresh installments of popular shows such as “Wednesday” and “The Witcher”. However, there are some significant series that won’t be back until 2026. Notable absentees from the 2025 lineup include the fifth and final season of “Outer Banks”, Season 4 of “Bridgerton”, Season 2 of “One Piece”, “The Gentlemen”, and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. This means that for many shows, viewers will have to wait up to two years between seasons, which reflects Netflix’s evolving strategy in content scheduling.
As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed that some of my favorite series, such as Bridgerton and One Piece, have been postponed to the year 2026. Here’s why:
For Bridgerton, executive producer Jess Brownell has emphasized the need for a two-year gap between seasons to preserve the show’s high production standards and intricate period details. It’s a labor of love that takes time to get right.
As for One Piece, they wrapped up filming their second season at the end of 2024. However, its delay until 2026 is due to the intricate post-production process it undergoes. With its extensive visual effects and the global distribution demands by Netflix for dubbing and subtitling in multiple languages, it’s no wonder we’ll have to wait a bit longer for its return.
In essence, these series are crafted with care and precision, ensuring an unparalleled viewing experience when they finally grace our screens. Patience, dear fans, is a virtue!
Due to director Guy Ritchie’s involvement in other movies, production for Season 2 of “The Gentlemen” won’t start until spring 2025. Conversely, the producers of “Outer Banks” plan to initiate filming on its final season in the same time frame, aiming for an early 2026 release to provide a satisfying conclusion for the series. Lastly, production on the second season of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” carries on through mid-2025, creating an estimated two-year gap between its first and second seasons.
Netflix’s Evolution in Managing Long-Running Series
Netflix‘s approach to TV release planning showcases substantial modifications in how they manage their most prized productions. After successful trials with the series Squid Game, Netflix has adopted a fresh method of commissioning multiple seasons at once for selected shows. This strategy, as evidenced by the ordering of both second and third seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender simultaneously, streamlines production planning and could potentially reduce waiting times between future seasons. By shooting two seasons back-to-back, post-production teams can work uninterruptedly instead of pausing to wait for fresh footage to be filmed, according to Netflix.
Learning that your beloved series won’t return for a while can surely be disheartening. However, there’s plenty to anticipate in 2025, as Netflix plans to wrap up popular series like “Squid Game” and “Stranger Things,” along with new installments of established favorites such as “Wednesday” and “Emily in Paris.” This strategic move is designed to keep viewers engaged while providing room for other productions to mature. It seems that Netflix has learned from past scheduling difficulties, where hasty productions sometimes resulted in lower quality and viewer discontent. Moreover, given the company’s dedication to extending the runs of its most successful shows, it’s likely that the gap between seasons will shrink in the coming years.
We’ll keep you posted with the latest news about Netflix’s 2025 TV lineup as soon as more details are revealed.
