Netflix Reveals 2025 Film Slate With Knives Out 3, The Old Guard 2, and More

2025 sees Netflix unveiling its movie schedule, setting release dates for various titles like “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery“, “The Old Guard 2“, and others. The streamer’s film roster commences in February with a trio of new premieres, one being the animated film “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep“, slated for release on February 11th. Spring highlights include “Plankton: The Movie” (March 7th) and “The Electric State” (March 14th), with the latter being a sci-fi film directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.

This coming summer, Netflix will officially make available the much-anticipated second installment of “The Old Guard,” starring Charlize Theron. The action sequel is set to drop on July 2nd. Interestingly, it’s one out of only two movies that Netflix has scheduled for release this summer; the other being “Fear Street: Prom Queen“, which currently doesn’t have a specific premiere date within the summer period.

Autumn is shaping up to be quite bustling for Netflix, with many of their anticipated productions set to premiere during this season. While specific dates haven’t been announced yet, viewers can look forward to the premieres of Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein”, Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man”, Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly”, the film “Rip” starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and a yet-to-be-titled project from Kathryn Bigelow featuring Idris Elba (among others). As of now, release dates for other planned Netflix movies, such as “Happy Gilmore 2”, have not been established. It’s been a while since we heard about The Old Guard 2, but the wait is finally over! The first movie came out in 2020 and was a major hit on Netflix. Rumors of a sequel began almost as soon as the original released, however, the production faced some challenges. One of these setbacks was a shakeup at Netflix behind the scenes. Last fall, they went through reshoots, and now it’s all systems go for the release!

The most recent addition to Johnson’s Knives Out series, titled “Wake Up Dead Man,” commenced production last year and was completed in August 2024. Lead actor Daniel Craig expresses optimism that the movie will enjoy an extended stay in cinemas, but it remains uncertain whether Netflix has any plans for a theatrical debut. Its predecessor, “Glass Onion,” had a brief run in 2022, making it eligible for Oscar consideration.

Moving forward into the year 2025, it’ll be intriguing to observe which Netflix movie takes center stage during the awards season. Over the past several years, Netflix has enjoyed significant recognition, with “Emilia Pérez” receiving 13 nominations for this year’s ceremony alone. Filmmakers like Bigelow, Baumbach, and del Toro have all directed Best Picture contenders (and even winners) throughout their careers. It’s possible that one of these veterans or a completely new production might create a stir at the upcoming Oscars.
