Star Wars Fans Are Raving About the Best Disney-Era Movie — And It’s Not What You Think

Among Star Wars enthusiasts, there’s been much discussion about which film shines brightest during the Disney era of this distant galaxy. After acquiring Lucasfilm from George Lucas in 2012, Disney launched the sequel trilogy with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015. Opinions differ on the quality of these three films, but there were also standalone movies produced that didn’t rely on the Skywalker Saga for their success. Interestingly, one of these spinoff movies has been voted as the best by Disney fans.

A post on the Star Wars subreddit extols the virtues of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” to no end. The entry starts by stating that despite having seen the movie multiple times, the final ten minutes still manage to stir deep emotions within the author’s hardened, world-weary heart. Key scenes mentioned include Krennic being slain by his own invention, Jyn and Cassian sharing a tender moment before a blast wave, Darth Vader’s terrifying portrayal in a hallway, the interior of the Tantive IV, and even the Princess character that falls into the uncanny valley. There’s an overwhelming amount of emotion crammed into such a brief period. Incredibly, I find myself deeply moved by this fantastic film.

I’ve seen Rogue One a dozen or more times…

Under the direction of Gareth Edwards, the movie “Rogue One” premiered in 2016 and acts as a precursor to “Star Wars: A New Hope”. It focuses on the story of how the Rebel Alliance obtained the blueprints for the Galactic Empire’s first Death Star. Initially, Princess Leia had these plans before she was captured by Darth Vader, and she entrusted them to R2-D2 with instructions to hand them over to Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. In “Rogue One”, we follow the Rebels’ journey as they acquire those critical blueprints, ultimately giving their lives in the process.

In the movie “Rogue One”, Felicity Jones played the lead role as Jyn Erso, Diego Luna portrayed Cassian Andor, and Ben Mendelsohn was Orson Krennic. A prequel series centered around Diego Luna’s character, titled “Andor“, has been released, delving into how Cassian Andor joined the Rebel Alliance. More recently, Felicity Jones hinted at the possibility of reprising her role as Jyn Erso in “Andor“. When asked by Variety during an interview for her new film “The Brutalist“, she stated, “There’s some unfinished business there. I think if you put Jyn in the right story, then why not?

Four years ago, Jones hinted at a wish to return to Star Wars. She told The Hollywood Reporter in October 2020, “Reincarnation could very well be possible in the Star Wars universe.” With her character’s fate seemingly sealed at the end of Rogue One, she implied there’s some unfinished business for Jyn.

Diego Luna has hinted that watching Season 2 of Andor might alter the way you view Rogue One. As he explained to Entertainment Weekly, “I believe that once people have seen Rogue One, after they’ve watched Season 2, they will see a different movie.” He continued, “The significance of everything in the film will be understood differently, knowing what had to occur for K-2SO (played by Alan Tudyk) to be present. It will make you experience the storyline of Rogue One in a fresh way, I think. And not just with K-2, but with numerous other characters. I believe it’ll be quite fascinating.
