The recently unveiled series features everyone’s beloved character, Spider-Man, in a fresh reinterpretation that has already won over fans and critics alike. The storyline delves into the life and escapades of Peter Parker, a high school student who doubles as the crime-fighting Spider-Man. Alongside him are a new circle of companions such as Nico Minoru, Pearl Pangan, Lonnie Lincoln, and Harry Osborne, with Norman Osborne, Harry’s father, also making an appearance. Despite its contemporary feel, the series draws inspiration from the iconic Stan Lee and Steve Ditko run on The Amazing Spider-Man comic books from the 1960s.
Originally planned to unfold within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and explore Peter’s journey becoming a budding superhero, culminating in the events of Captain America: Civil War where he first appeared, this series has since been confirmed to exist independently from the franchise. Although this may have left some fans wanting more connections to the extensive universe, it also presents exciting storyline opportunities. This development has sparked curiosity about which characters might make an appearance. So far in the season, there are a few intriguing clues suggesting a popular character, Miles Morales, could be involved.
Foreshadowing or Coincidence?
In the premiere of the series, Doctor Strange engages in combat with a Symbiote creature that devastates Midtown High School where Peter Parker is enrolled. Eager to aid Strange in subduing the extraterrestrial being, Peter intervenes but gets bitten by a spider that emerged from one of Strange’s portals. This incident hints at the spider originating from another dimension or universe, similar to the spider that bit Miles Morales in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” It could be a subtle nod to a different studio’s franchise, but it might also lay the groundwork for something more significant later on.
Another intriguing point for discussion is the scene where Peter gets bit by the interdimensional spider, which then lands on an unidentified student’s backpack. Since we don’t know who the student is, it could be anyone, including Miles. It’s possible that the backpack belongs to someone connected to Miles, explaining how it ends up with him. The creators of the show seem to have deliberately set this up, so it’s worth getting curious about where this plot point might lead. If Miles doesn’t get bitten, it still provides an opportunity for introducing other Spider-Man characters into the storyline.
As a dedicated comic book enthusiast and movie critic, I’ve noticed an intriguing Easter egg in the theme song of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” titled “Neighbor Like Me.” If you pay close attention to the lyrics, you’ll hear them sing, “spectacular, ultimate, he’s amazing.” These adjectives are not just casual compliments; they’re the exact titles of some iconic Spider-Man comic series. The “Ultimate” series, in particular, rings a bell for seasoned fans, as it was where we were first introduced to the Miles Morales version of our friendly neighborhood hero. Whether this is a subtle wink or a hint at the character’s appearance remains to be seen, but it certainly adds an exciting layer of speculation for us comic aficionados!
Let’s Be Real
It’s quite possible that these hints and references are simply wishful speculation; Sony has been utilizing the animated version of Miles Morales for their Spider-Verse movies, which suggests they might not be eager to share the character with Marvel Studios. However, keep in mind that the MCU has a history of surprising fans, so if these Easter Eggs don’t indicate a future appearance by Miles, they could still hint at some unexpected twists further down the line in the series.
Although Miles Morales might not be present in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, it’s been confirmed that he will make an appearance in the upcoming third installment of “Spider-Verse”. As stated by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige at D23 Brazil in 2024, reported by Gamerant, Miles is expected to debut in live-action within the MCU following his animated movie appearance.
