A two-part dramatic documentary titled “Brian and Maggie” transports us to the ’80s, immersing us in the realms of primetime broadcasts, television, and politics. This compelling production delves further into the intriguing relationship shared by journalist Brian Walden and former UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher, offering a closer look at their bond.
The unique bond between them is delved into in the show, as it follows the events leading up to their stormy last interview, a conversation that marked the end of any real-life contact between them.
Prior to the release of Brian and Maggie, Steve Coogan, who portrays Walden and is also an executive producer, shared with TopMob magazine that a particular scene was removed from the show’s final cut because it was perceived as overly compassionate towards Thatcher.
Actually, during the editing process, we removed some parts as I felt they were overly compassionate. Our intention was to underscore the existence of this damage instead.
At a screening for the series, Coogan found himself under scrutiny regarding a specific scene. When asked to clarify the scene’s identity, Coogan disclosed his belief: “I believe it was the part where [Brian] said ‘She’s worth 100 of them’, I felt it seemed overly sweet for him to say that after having just stabbed her with a knife.
In my opinion, simply clinking glasses in her honor, as he often does, seemed adequate without adding any extra words. I believe it would be more fitting for him to express his sentiment subtly by just raising a glass.
Absolutely, when Coogan mentions it, he’s talking about the tense moment that arises between interviewee and interviewer once the recording has ended.
After being startled by the interrogative style of Brian during the interview and how it made her feel, Harriet Walter’s portrayal of Thatcher appears visibly uneasy when he joins her and the rest of the London Weekend Television crew for a drink.
After making it clear she had no further words for him, Thatcher departed, implying that in reality, they never spoke again after this encounter.
The creators of the series clearly demonstrate they hold no affinity for Thatcher or her political views. Coogan further confessed that being mindful of this, they considered presenting her in a way that would strongly contrast with these sentiments.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ll openly admit that I did indeed remove a scene from the film. It wasn’t about presenting a rehab narrative for Margaret Thatcher. Instead, I aimed for balance in the storytelling, ensuring it remained authentic and fair to all involved.
Regardless if Brian chose to act with the knife for journalistic purposes or self-preservation, it’s subjective interpretation. What mattered most was ensuring a fair representation of events.
Interestingly, many creators of this program, typically leaning towards the liberal side of politics, were keen to avoid creating a biased and preachy piece. As a result, there was a risk that the final product might lack depth or become overly light-hearted instead.
In a chat with TopMob magazine earlier, Steve Coogan shed some light on Thatcher’s enduring impact. He put it this way: “There’s no denying her influence – the post-war agreement she dismantled was stale, and there was a need for transformation. She stepped up and boldly demonstrated that change was necessary.
She was filled with ambition and passion, yet seemed unable to understand others’ feelings. Today, it might be suggested that she experiences certain emotional or psychological difficulties.
