Each year, Super Bowl Sunday serves as the starting point for promotions of several major summer movies. In the previous season, studios like Walt Disney Pictures (with Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Universal Pictures (Wicked, Twisters, Despicable Me 4, The Fall Guy, Monkey Man, Kung Fu Panda 4), and Paramount Pictures (A Quiet Place: Day One and IF) took center stage, while Warner Bros., Amazon, Netflix, Apple, and Sony chose to observe from the sidelines.
2023 brings several exciting sneak peeks of upcoming movies, such as a fresh glimpse at Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” (May 2), the debut trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (July 11), and newly released footage from “How to Train Your Dragon” (June 13). Additionally, you can look forward to new teaser trailers for “M3GAN 2.0” (June 27) and “Jurassic World Rebirth” (July 2), shown during the match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Viewers watching the Super Bowl on Fox on February 9th will not only enjoy the game, but also catch previews of upcoming movies like Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which releases on May 23rd, and the Smurfette character voiced by Rihanna in the animated “Smurfs” reboot coming out on July 18th. Another possible star gracing the Super Bowl could be Stitch, a character from Disney’s live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch,” set to premiere on May 23rd as well. Disney recently unveiled a sneak peek for “Moana 2” in November.
As reported by Deadline, Disney has secured two out of three release dates for Marvel Studios’ 2025 cinematic lineup. These films include “Captain America: Brave New World,” starring Anthony Mackie, set to premiere on February 14th, and the summer blockbusters “Thunderbolts”* and “Fantastic Four”. Following a Super Bowl ad for “Inside Out 2”, Disney may reveal a sneak peek of Pixar’s upcoming original science fiction film, “Elio,” scheduled for release on June 13th.
*Note: The title “Thunderbolts” is not an official title and has been used as a placeholder.
Confirmations have been made for several exciting projects, including the live-action version of Universal-DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon,” a sequel to the Blumhouse horror hit “M3GAN,” and the new “Jurassic World” movie helmed by Gareth Edwards, who previously directed “Godzilla” and “Star Wars: Rogue One.
One major attraction that won’t be making an appearance at the upcoming big game is the sequel to last year’s hit musical, “Wicked: For Good,” produced by Universal. This highly anticipated film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as the witches of Oz. Although their Super Bowl trailer garnered a staggering 40.1 million views back in February, the sequel itself won’t be released until November. The cost for a 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl has been reportedly soaring to an incredible $8 million (from around $7 million in 2023 and 2024).
Warner Bros., a studio that typically avoids airing its films during the Super Bowl, is said to be holding back its entire 2025 lineup. This lineup includes “Mickey 17”, a sci-fi black comedy starring Robert Pattinson (releasing on March 7), “The Alto Knights”, a gangster movie featuring Robert De Niro (releasing on March 21), an adaptation of the video game “A Minecraft Movie” (releasing on April 4), the supernatural thriller “Sinners”, starring Michael B. Jordan and directed by Ryan Coogler (releasing on April 18), a sports drama titled “F1” featuring Brad Pitt (releasing on June 27), and the “Superman” reboot, which is being directed by James Gunn (releasing on July 11).
Instead of choosing to promote the initial DC Films production with an advertisement on traditional television during the AFC and NFC championship games over the weekend, Warner Bros. opted for something different. This time, Superman and Steel’s canine companion, Krypto the Super-Dog, will deliver a special message during Puppy Bowl XXI’s pre-game show (in 2023, The Flash, which was Warner Bros.’ first Super Bowl ad in 17 years, happened to air during the Chiefs and Eagles game).
In addition to Warner Bros., several other studios and streaming platforms are not participating in the 2025 Super Bowl. These include Netflix, which aired original movies such as “Knives Out 2”, “Enola Holmes 2”, “The Gray Man”, and Ryan Reynolds’ “The Adam Project” in a 70-second spot back in 2022. Sony, Apple Studios, Lionsgate (meaning no trailer for “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina”), and Amazon MGM Studios are also not present. According to Variety, Amazon MGM Studios, who bought ad space for television’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” in 2022 and the films “Air” and “Creed III” in 2023, will be absent as well. Their major release this year is the Ben Affleck action-thriller “The Accountant 2”, set for release on April 25.
The 2025 Super Bowl airs Sunday, Feb. 9 on FOX.
