Will Smith Finally Unveils His The Matrix Project (And It’s Great)

After much anticipation, Will Smith has officially debuted his “Matrix” project with the release of the music video for his new song titled “Beautiful Scars,” featuring Big Sean. The video commences with a skit that humorously reenacts the iconic red pill/blue pill scene from “The Matrix.” In this scenario, Big Sean portrays Morpheus and praises Smith for his impressive career decisions over the years, but hints at one choice he wishes Smith could change. The allusion is to Smith’s decision to pass on the role of Neo in “The Matrix.” Morpheus presents Smith with a dilemma: take the blue pill to keep things as they are or take the red pill and travel back to the ’90s to star in “The Matrix” instead. Despite being content with his life, Smith is torn, and he ultimately decides to take both pills, leading into the song.

The music video mirrors some of the memorable scenes from “The Matrix”, such as the dojo battle and Neo evading bullets on the rooftop. According to Variety, the “Beautiful Scars” video was launched simultaneously with Smith’s album announcement, titled “Based on a True Story“, which is set for release in March. Take a look at the video displayed above.

During January, Smith gradually hinted at a project linked to “The Matrix” through a series of mysterious social media updates. After much anticipation, he unveiled the cover art for the “Beautiful Scars” single featuring him and Big Sean portraying Neo and Morpheus respectively. The music video for this song premiered at an exclusive event in several key U.S. cities, initially screening in selected cinemas before it was made available online.

The upcoming fifth part of the Matrix series, titled “The Matrix 5,” is currently under production. Drew Goddard is assigned to handle both the scriptwriting and direction. At present, it’s been announced that Keanu Reeves won’t be participating in the film. As for when “The Matrix 5” will hit theaters, no release date has been set yet.

Reinterpreting the idea,

Incorporating “The Matrix” as a theme for their music video could have been seen as merely a trend, but Smith managed to turn it into an artistic triumph. The references to “The Matrix” align with the song’s message of “Beautiful Scars,” which is about self-improvement through learning from past mistakes. In essence, the lyrics by Smith and Big Sean suggest that our flaws and imperfections play a crucial role in defining us as individuals.

Fittingly, the music video sees Smith ruminate on one of his career’s pivotal moments, representing a “what if?” scenario for him. After watching “The Matrix,” he came to appreciate the brilliance of directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski, something that eluded him during their initial meeting. Although he may harbor regrets over passing on “The Matrix,” he was able to recover and maintain a thriving career.

It’s no wonder that the “Beautiful Scars” video showcases high-quality production, taking much inspiration from one of the most visually captivating blockbusters ever made. With its cinematic elements, it becomes apparent why Smith chose to premiere it in a theater setting. Given the title of his forthcoming album, it seems that Smith is delving into autobiographical themes with his new music. We’ll eagerly await to find out if any additional singles receive video treatments reminiscent of movies.
