It’s been announced that Miramax is planning a remake of the 1998 sci-fi thriller “The Faculty,” which rapidly rose to cult classic status. As per Variety’s report, the original director, Robert Rodriguez, will serve as producer for this updated version. The script will be penned by the emerging talent Drew Hancock, whose first feature film, “Companion,” is set to release in theaters this week and has been receiving positive reviews. BoulderLight Productions, known for “Barbarian” and “Weapons,” will handle production on the remake. At present, there’s no word on who will direct or any casting details. The timeline for when we might see this remake in theaters is unknown, but you can stream the original “The Faculty” on Pluto TV right now.
In a fictional small town in Ohio, a creature film unfolds, with the local high school serving as the epicenter for an extraterrestrial invasion. The events start subtly and gradually, with several teachers appearing to be under some sort of possession. A handful of students attempt to piece together the truth, yet their suspicions are dismissed by those beyond the school’s confines.
In this production, the ensemble is impressive, and for several of the actors, it’s their debut in a significant role or one of their earliest. Elijah Wood takes on Casey Connor, the school newspaper photographer, while Jordana Brewster portrays Delilah Profitt, the popular editor of the paper. Josh Hartnett steps into the character of local troublemaker Zeke Tyler, and Laura Harris is Marybeth Hutchinson, the new student who has a crush on him. Clea DuVall assumes the role of Stokely Mitchell, a mysterious character with feelings for football star Stan Rosado, played by Shawn Hatosy. Usher is cast as Gabe, a fellow student.
The children in question are not just any kids; they’re accompanied by some notable educators like Salma Hayek, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick, and Jon Stewart. Over the years, this cast has frequently been asked about this project due to its enduring cult-classic status. In 2020, Wood shared his thoughts on the movie with Yahoo News, describing it as his most impactful role because of the exceptional crew. He particularly enjoyed working with Robert, who had a unique directing style compared to others he’s worked with. The atmosphere on set was filled with love, and the cast remains close, making the experience all the more memorable.
It’s uncertain whether the upcoming remake of the film will manage to recapture the same level of excitement, as it appears that production is still in its early stages. For the time being, enthusiasts can watch the 1998 version of “The Faculty” on Pluto TV, or choose to rent or buy it from digital PVOD stores. The movie is also available for purchase on DVD and Blu-ray formats.
