The ambition for a movie adaptation of “Sleeping Dogs” remains unfulfilled. News about a live-action film with Donnie Yen as Wei Shen, the central character, has been on hold since 2017. Although there was some progress in late 2024, Yen clarified that the project is no longer moving forward. With fans eager to witness “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” actor, Donnie Yen, battling it out in the streets of Hong Kong, another Marvel hero has stepped up to breathe life into this Square Enix game.
Actor Simu Liu from “Shang Chi” used social media to update fans on a promise he made regarding a popular action-adventure game. When asked about “Sleeping Dogs,” Liu responded, “Collaborating with the rights holders to bring ‘Sleeping Dogs’ to the movies!” Previously, the lead in “Barbie” had expressed his desire to adapt “Shen” for the big screen; discussions about this potential project surfaced in 2022 at San Diego Comic-Con.
Back then, I might have been advised to keep quiet about it, but let’s just say there’s a video game in development that could potentially star an Asian-American protagonist set in Hong Kong. Whether or not I’m involved in this project, I can’t confirm yet, but if so, I’m definitely looking forward to immersing myself in it! I didn’t want to reveal the title as I didn’t want to create unnecessary buzz before official announcements.
Initially, there were whispers suggesting that I might be involved in Yen’s project, but it appears that Simu Liu, the star of Shang-Chi, is now set to lead the project himself. Despite the fact that Yen has been waiting patiently for years for this project to take off, we can keep our fingers crossed that Liu will do justice to the task and rekindle the excitement surrounding Sleeping Dogs that has been dormant for so long. It’s also heartening to know that Liu is a dedicated gamer, having openly expressed his fondness for games like StarCraft, Mortal Kombat, and Diablo. If he manages to secure the rights, it promises to be an exhilarating experience indeed, given his background in high-energy stunts.
The live-action Sleeping Dogs movie has no release date or studio at the moment.
