As a bystander in the vibrant world of Pokemon fandom, I’ve witnessed heated discussions that span a wide range of topics. However, one debate that has stood the test of time revolves around the Legendary Beasts. These beasts are the trio – Entei, Raikou, and Suicune – brought back to life by Ho-Oh. When enthusiastic fans were coining their own terminology to describe distinct elements of the series, some referred to these Legendary Beasts as the ‘Legendary Dogs’. This label caused a stir in the community because these Pokemon appeared more feline than canine, leading others to call them the ‘Legendary Cats‘. Over time, the community reached a consensus and began using the neutral term of ‘Legendary Beast’. Yet, the discussion about whether they are cats or dogs continues to linger in the annals of Pokemon folklore.
A fresh post on Reddit by user Unbekannnt0 has sparked discussions once again with a comical SpongeBob meme. The Reddit user playfully criticizes the common belief that Entei, Raikou, and Suicune are dogs, despite each creature being modeled after specific types of big cats. This has led to other users jokingly poking fun at those who thought the trio were actually dogs instead of cats. Although we have additional details about what exactly these Legendary Beasts are based on, this debate has never carried significant weight. Pokemon often draws inspiration from various sources when creating new creatures; it’s unusual for a single source to be the only influence.
Why do so many people insist they are dogs?

Are Pokemon’s Legendary Beasts Cats or Dogs?
People started referring to Entei, Raikou, and Suicune as the Legendary Dogs, based on their initial impressions of them. Each creature walks on all fours and has sharp teeth like a dog. Among the trio, Suicune appears most canine-like, with its long snout and slender body resembling a hound. However, some fans argue that they have more feline characteristics than canine ones. Entei sports a mane like a lion, while Suicune has leopard spots and a lean physique. Raikou is the most cat-like of the three, with a feline face and saber-toothed tiger fangs, as well as black stripes reminiscent of a tiger. The early design of Raikou leans more towards its thunder-tiger aesthetic, giving it a blue coloration and a feline appearance.
Muneo Saitou, the creator of the Pokemon Legendary Beasts, shared insights into his design inspirations for the trio. Initially, Saitou conceptualized Entei before moving on to design Raikou and Suicune. The designs didn’t coalesce until Saitou started working backwards with the creatures, creating a mythology that links them. This led to the development of Entei, which resembles a lion in its final form, according to Saito. Following this, he designed Raikou and Suicune by drawing inspiration from a tiger and leopard for their initial appearances, respectively. Saito’s revelations have solidified the idea that the Legendary Beasts are based on cats rather than dogs.
Does the Legendary Beasts Debate Matter?
Entei, Raikou, and Suicune are not actual cats or dogs; they’re Pokémon characters, often inspired by various animals but not limited to one species. Labeling them as cats or dogs is misleading because they are entirely fictional creatures with legendary status. The transformation of the Legendary Beasts into dinosaurs in their Paradox forms doesn’t make them the Legendary Dinosaurs; instead, it showcases the imaginative freedom within the franchise, where any Pokémon can be anything. Saitou designed the trio’s silhouettes to vaguely resemble a cat or dog shape, but they are not actually either animal.
In the series Pokemon Generations, a scene depicts the trio meeting their end in a fire, implying they were canine-like creatures before being brought back to life by Ho-Oh. The challenge arises because fans struggle to name these three entities: Entei, Raikou, and Suicune. Game Freak didn’t provide any official labels for them initially, leading fans to come up with their own names to distinguish them from other Legendaries. Since the trio Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno were called the Legendary Birds, it was natural for the Legendary Beasts to be named something comparable. However, fans couldn’t agree on what they should be collectively known as, which caused confusion among the fanbase.
It’s highly unlikely that Unbekannnt0 was being serious when creating the meme, but it’s time to end the discussion. Entei, Raikou, and Suicune aren’t household pets like cats or dogs; they are Pokémon. Using “Legendary Beasts” as a term for the trio is appropriate, and there’s no need for further debate on this subject.
