Dwyane Wade is reflecting on a scary experience.
Around a year following the ex-Miami Heat player’s removal of a tumor from his kidney, he opened up publicly for the first time about the profound impact this experience had on his life.
43-year-old Dwyane shared a memory from his first complete body scan, which took place during an episode of The Way with Dwyane Wade on January 30th. He said, “I turned 40 and I walked in asking the doctor, ‘Tell me everything about my body.’ The full-body scan allowed them to examine my entire physique, even my internal organs. It was during this scan that they discovered an issue with my kidney.
To begin with, he sought medical attention due to persistent stomach issues, bothersome cramps, and a sluggish flow of urine.
Dwyane clarified that what he had in his kidney wasn’t something that could be tested or biopsied, as it was just a cyst or tumor. The only way to get a sample for testing would have been through surgery.
He recalled, “The doctor was like, ‘You need to have kidney surgery.’”
Following consultations with various medical professionals regarding the diagnosis, Dwyane – father of Kaavia (6), Zaire (22), Zaya (17), Xavier (10) and his nephew Dahveion (21) – chose to proceed with a surgical procedure.
Reflecting on his generally healthy lifestyle, he admitted that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Fortunately, he underwent surgery, as the tumor was indeed malignant. Currently, he only has one kidney remaining, while the other is 60% functional. During the operation, they removed about 40% of his second kidney to ensure they could completely eliminate any remaining cancer cells from it.
For the former NBA superstar, navigating life during that time was an internal battle.
He mentioned, “That was the first occasion when my family – my father, my children – witnessed me being vulnerable. That instance might have been the lowest point I’ve ever experienced in my life. When I was alone, I was grappling with difficulties.
As a man, it is important not to show vulnerability to your family. You should avoid appearing weak or being caught in weak moments. However, in times when I felt weak, I discovered strength through the support of my family, friends, and community.
Dwyane Wade initially didn’t discuss his health struggles openly, but subtly alluded to it during their 10th wedding anniversary celebration with Gabrielle last year.
Dwyane confessed that year nine was challenging for them, as they expressed while sharing a video on Instagram in August. They were essentially reflecting on the journey that led them to where they are now.
On our special occasion’s balcony, speaking with a heart full of emotion, I expressed my gratitude to Gabrielle: “Thank you for always being there. You’ve shown me so many things I might have forgotten along the journey… Thank you for teaching me, thank you for having faith in me.
