In a future version of events, Luke Cage – formerly known as Power Man – returns to the Marvel Universe, boasting the combined abilities of Hulk, Iron Fist, and Sentry. Readers were initially introduced to this older incarnation of Luke Cage in Marvel’s 2023 holiday special, “Timeless.” In his home timeline, Power Man hailed from a world dominated by a new Moon Knight, who coincidentally was his ex-Heroes for Hire partner and longtime friend, Danny Rand, alias Iron Fist. Wielding the powers he’d absorbed from Hulk, Iron Fist, and Sentry, Power Man managed to subdue Moon Knight but appeared to perish in the struggle. However, it’s later revealed that he was hurled through time and has now arrived in the present day.
In an exclusive sneak peek, the first issue of “Power Man: Timeless” by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Bernard Chang, and Marcelo Maiolo is unveiled. The narrative opens with Power Man adrift in space, listening to a mysterious voiceover through captions. This voice reveals that Luke Cage once destroyed the moon, fragmented time, and transformed into Power Man, Wielder of Living Weapons. Upon regaining consciousness, Power Man’s sole focus is locating Danny Rand and halting him before he seizes control of the world as Moon Knight.
It hasn’t dawned on Power Man yet that Danny Rand, his friend, passed away during last year’s Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special #1. A funeral was held for Danny, and many superheroes like Captain America, Wolverine, She-Hulk, the new Iron Fist (Lin Lie, previously Swordmaster), Shang-Chi, Daredevil, Spider-Man, members of the Avengers, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and a younger Power Man were all present. Unbeknownst to him, Marvel is laying the groundwork for Danny Rand’s return to life.
In a different universe, Power Man starts to notice that the ominous future he originates from doesn’t mirror this one. Remarkably, in this reality, Luke Cage still has a wife and child who are thriving. Overwhelmed by this contrast, Power Man decides to abandon Earth and journey into the vast, unexplored regions of space in search of tranquility. The enigmatic storyteller recalls how Power Man acquired his Living Weapon abilities, similar to how seclusion benefited the Hulk. Also, the narrator brings up how Danny Rand tapped into the power of the dragon Shou-Lao. Furthermore, we learn that the Sentry isolated himself deep within the Earth to suppress his powers, yet discovered that the Void remained with him. Intriguingly, it is revealed that the Void serves as our covert narrator for the series Power Man: Timeless.
In a chat with writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing of ComicBook, it was disclosed that the character Void will serve as the narrator for readers in the upcoming miniseries titled Power Man: Timeless.
In Power Man: Timeless, instead of Luke Cage narrating the story or having a third-person narrator, the character known as The Void serves as the narrator. As you progress through the book, it becomes clear that The Void’s narration isn’t just for the reader but is also what Luke is saying to himself. This allows us to glimpse into Luke’s inner thoughts and emotions, such as his insecurities, fears, anger, and need for release.
He mentioned, “The hidden struggles will constantly trouble Luke throughout the story. While he’ll undoubtedly face a formidable enemy head-on, the true terror might lie within his very soul.
In addition to battling familiar foes, Power Man will encounter a fresh cosmic menace. This new villain was conceived as an antithesis and response to a character initially introduced during the creation of “Timeless.” It’s an intriguing concept that we found appealing and felt it could be developed further someday. Over time, this character became integral to the narrative. Furthermore, elements from our personal explorations concerning the solar system and its functioning have been woven into the plot.
Collin Kelly commented, “Mysteries hidden deep within our solar system for a million years, plus some fresh companions join the journey. By the third issue, there are some fantastic guest appearances as he ventures further through the solar system.
Power Man: Timeless #1 goes on sale Wednesday, February 5th.
