In theory, Mary Shelley’s gothic novel Frankenstein and the renowned Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro seem like a perfect pairing – more so when we take into account that The Shape of Water director has openly expressed his desire to adapt the classic horror tale for nearly his entire career.
Gladly, the anticipation won’t last much longer as Netflix has confirmed the arrival of this fresh interpretation of the timeless story around mid-2025. Preliminary indications suggest that it could be one of the most significant cinematic happenings of the year.
In this upcoming movie, an impressive lineup of top-tier actors such as Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Oscar Isaac is expected to appear. This week, Netflix unveiled a fresh snapshot from the film that offers our closest glimpse so far of Oscar Isaac portraying Victor Frankenstein, which you can view above for yourself.
In an interview with Vanity Fair towards the end of 2024, del Toro hinted mysteriously: “Partially, gothic romance arose from a fascination with ruins. Sometimes, they’re even more beautiful than structures that are fully intact because it’s the collision of creation and decay.
Given that the movie has finally come into being following years of development limbo, it’s definitely worth celebrating! As we anticipate its upcoming premiere later this year, here’s a rundown of what we currently know about the film – such as its potential release date and any additional stars who will be joining the cast.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein release date speculation
Exciting update: Although an exact launch date hasn’t been set, Netflix has officially announced that the movie is slated for release in November 2025.
It’s unclear if the date refers to the movie’s theatrical release or its streaming debut, but it appears probable that it will have a grand premiere at a film festival such as Venice, earlier in the year. We’ll notify you once we get any additional information.
The movie took quite some time to produce, starting in February 2024 and continuing solidly up until September. It appears that it was carefully and thoughtfully made.

What is the plot of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein?
Frankenstein’s narrative is undeniably one of the most recognizable stories across the globe. In brief, Victor Frankenstein embarks on an ambitious quest to revive the deceased and eventually manages to bring a monstrous being into existence.
However, contrary to some earlier reports, it appears that Del Toro won’t be retelling the traditional story we’re familiar with. Instead, his adaptation seems set to present a new perspective, taking place possibly decades after Frankenstein’s supposed demise. The narrative primarily follows Dr Pretorious, a character who made an appearance in the 1935 Universal Monster movie Bride of Frankenstein.
In the 19th-century Eastern Europe setting, the movie revolves around Dr. Pretorious, who embarks on a mission to locate Frankenstein’s monster, who was thought to have perished in a fire four decades earlier, with intentions of continuing his research on it.
When we get any official confirmation of this we’ll update the page.
Is there a trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein?
