Legendary creator of ‘Daredevil’, Frank Miller, is helping stir excitement among fans ahead of the premiere of ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘. The upcoming Disney+ series draws inspiration from Miller’s iconic run on ‘Daredevil’, collaborated with David Mazzucchelli. On the comic book front, Marvel is launching a fresh publishing line called Marvel Premier Collection, highlighting Marvel’s most acclaimed and prestigious storylines and creators. The inaugural title for the Marvel Premier Collection is ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, with Miller penning an introduction for this new release.
Frank Miller’s preface for the gripping narrative of “Daredevil: Born Again” is unveiled exclusively here. This story, praised as “one of the best Daredevil tales ever penned” by The Washington Post, delves deep into the essence of Matt Murdock and serves as a compelling introduction to his character and the world he inhabits. Additionally, this edition features an afterword penned by Charlie Cox, the actor who portrays Daredevil.
In the introduction of “Daredevil: Born Again”, Frank Miller explains that regardless of a character’s history, it is his responsibility to provide a fresh take or even a transformation, similar to an actor stepping into an established role. To quote an actor, he wants to ‘personalize the character’. He discusses his projects on “Ronin”, “Batman”, and “Sin City” before being asked to return to work on “Daredevil”.
In the year 1986, some years after our initial encounter, editor Ralph Macchio invited me for a return visit, and I felt it was high time for another transformation – this one significantly more profound than the previous one. The character of Daredevil, I firmly believed, wasn’t in need of reinterpretation or renovation. He required nothing less than a complete, radical rebirth, as per Miller’s assertion.
He required a rebirth, a transformation back to his core self, followed by renewal. He needed to be refreshed, purified, made anew. The result was a more composed individual, a stronger one, a content man.”
(Original: “He needed to be born again. Stripped to his essence, then revivified. Cleansed. Purified. A calmer man. A stronger man. A happy man.”)
Frank Miller’s introduction:
“In the days of the old world, when the sun still shone and warm winds blew, there lived a man… a man who was once an instrument of fear, now broken and in need of redemption. But he would have to be born again.
Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Comics and Franchise, stated, “We’ve all pondered classic queries such as: ‘Where do I begin? Which story is a must-read? What supplementary material should I engage with before or after the upcoming movie or series for an enhanced experience?’ The Marvel Premier Collection is our solution to these age-old dilemmas. This program will serve as our primary publishing line, catering to both newcomers and seasoned fans seeking a gateway into — or a deeper dive into — the Marvel Universe. These titles won’t be the only starting points, but they will certainly rank among the top choices.
The Marvel Premier Collection titled “Daredevil: Born Again” will be available for purchase starting February 4th at all book retailers.
