Last Christmas special, DI Mervin Wilson first appeared on Death in Paradise, and it wasn’t long before it was obvious that he harbored a hidden truth.
It seems he went to Saint Marie for a vacation, but ended up leaving sooner than planned as the beautiful, sunbathed Caribbean island didn’t live up to his expectations.
Right…
Initially, I found myself under suspicion following my clandestine presence near a prospective target’s residence, an incident which ultimately exposed a hidden truth. This revelation not only cast me in a different light but also set the stage for a series of events that could propel season 14 to unprecedented levels of intrigue and suspense, making it potentially the most captivating installment yet.
Mervin wasn’t in Saint Marie for leisurely activities like eating a bokit or enjoying the turquoise waters. Instead, he had a more serious reason for being there – visiting his mother Dorna, whom he had never met personally. As a child, he was too young to remember her, which might explain his somewhat tense disposition.
It’s unclear whether he aimed for a romantic connection with her, or if he just needed to ask some pressing questions that only she could respond to.
Why did you give me away? Did you think about reaching out? Did you ever love me?
There is so much about Mervin we still don’t know.
Unfortunately, the planned reunion didn’t take place as his mother had passed away a couple of months back. He received this sad news from one of her neighbors.
Although he wasn’t fully prepared to meet her yet, initially choosing to leave without introducing himself, as it stood, he could still choose to approach her if he decided to change his plans.
But very quickly, that choice was taken away from him.
Mervin will never meet his mother.
Following a bit of investigation, Selwyn shared that Dorna was on her father’s fishing boat when a sudden and powerful storm hit.
Four months after taking care of her husband who suffered from dementia, she chose to scatter his ashes at sea. Unfortunately, during this act, she became the victim of an unexpected accident.
Upon reviewing the police dossier provided by the commissioner, Mervin uncovered a crucial point that alters the entire scenario: the coroner’s initial judgment was incorrect. In reality, his mother’s demise was not an accident.
If it’s true that Dorna was killed, then who is accountable for this horrendous deed? What factors led them to carry out such an atrocious act?
It’s no surprise that Robert Thorogood, the show’s creator and lead writer, has chosen this plotline, given that Death in Paradise is a murder mystery series. Mervin’s past storyline also presents an opportunity to introduce an intriguing long-term enigma alongside each week’s case, which will help us learn more about his character.
Over time, as we delved deeper into each lead detective’s complexities and experienced their tougher, emotional aspects, our understanding and affection for them has grown, including their flaws and imperfections.
But for that to happen with Mervin, does his mum really need to have been murdered?
If it turns out that was her destiny (though there’s a strong possibility there might be a different explanation, making me appear rather foolish), it wouldn’t be much different from another typical case.
This time around, the storyline will span across several episodes, focusing on one of our principal characters. However, I find the repetition of a single central theme somewhat unappealing.
Rather than opting for a new path, the show has yet again decided to follow the familiar route, which appears to be a squandered chance.
Mervin’s motive for meeting Dorna isn’t yet clear, but it seems he wants to discover more about his mother and gain a better understanding of himself through this encounter, as she can provide personal insights that he lacks.
Additionally, it encompasses the desire to be part of something greater, to experience camaraderie and shared identity. The DI hadn’t delved deeply into this culture before, but with his mother as a bridge, there was an opportunity, if not a guarantee, for a connection – a chance to embrace what was previously unexplored.
Just as I mentioned earlier, those are indeed my sentiments, not Mervin’s. He presents an image of a lonely soul, mustering the strength to pursue something greater for himself.
And that can still happen, as Selwyn noted.
You may think this island isn’t what it once was for you, but maybe staying could help you discover more about Saint Marie, the place that held such significance in your mother’s life,” I suggested.
He might discover an expanded network of family, both blood-related and chosen, which he hasn’t encountered before. This group could provide him with understanding, support, and a sense of belonging, helping him connect not only with his mother but also with aspects of himself that have been hidden or inactive for some time.
This new direction for Death in Paradise is both deeply moving and filled with many uncertainties and tension, which alone would keep us hooked. However, introducing a suspicious element seems to dilute its authenticity, to some extent.
We already have plenty of that, so did we really need more?
Leaving Selwyn’s fate shrouded in question adds an extra layer of intrigue, ensuring that viewers remain captivated, thereby giving Mervin the opportunity to explore his individual journey independently.
However, by connecting it to a broader question or involving another suspect, the initial raw emotion he felt upon his mother’s death, which was previously unsuspecting, becomes less significant.
It’s possible that there could be another factor involved. Maybe the show “Death in Paradise” might surprise us by showing greater self-assurance in veering away from the usual and providing an unexpectedly innocent solution instead.
Is there a possibility that his mother might still be living, given some extraordinary explanation for the situation? Given the show’s history of challenging believability, this wouldn’t be surprising.
However, if Mervin chooses to persist due to his eagerness to tackle another mystery instead of delving deeper into his roots, as suggested earlier, it contradicts the initial premise we were led to believe.
