Has Danny John-Jules really left Death in Paradise?
During the latest Christmas special, Dwayne nearly didn’t get to celebrate the holidays with his aged father Nelson. This was due to him being asked directly by Selwyn to guard a potential murder victim instead, a duty he initially fulfilled.

View Urgent ForecastIn the recent Christmas episode, Dwayne almost forfeited celebrating the holiday season with his elderly dad Nelson because Selwyn requested his help in watching over a suspected attempted murder victim. At first, he complied with this order.
However, over time, he chose to go against his supervisor’s orders and instead opt for some precious moments with his father. This situation led him to reevaluate his life choices.
Later on, he informed him that he was resigning, as he had come to understand that there were more significant matters demanding his attention in life at this moment.
He then appeared to confirm his decision to Darlene.
She mentioned that it seems you’ll be spending more time with your dad, as you’ve decided to retire your uniform.
“Well, I couldn’t do both things,” he responded matter-of-factly.
But even then, you might have doubted whether we’d seen the last of Dwayne.
It wouldn’t have been unexpected if he appeared in the Season 14 premiere, given that he’s known for making decisions according to his own rhythm, regardless of any potential consequences.
But true to his word, there was no sign of him in tonight’s episode (Friday 31st January)…

Of course, it’s not the first time he’s left.
John-Jules was a cast member on Death in Paradise for the initial seven seasons, then left temporarily. However, he reappeared in the show’s inaugural Christmas special that aired in 2021. It was during this time that Dwayne shared a rare emotional moment with Darlene, admitting that his father Nelson seemed to have less vitality, as if he had fewer years left.
“That’s why we’re really back, this is where he wants to spend the rest of his days,” he explained.
John-Jules had returned permanently to the show, but his last episode aired in December of last year.
However, this moment seemed unusually subdued, contradicting the usual dynamic of our character, and it had an air of inconsequentiality, hinting at a possible reappearance.
Surely if he was leaving for good, there would be more made of it?
Yet, when the cast list for season 14 was unveiled, John-Jules’ name was nowhere to be found. Additionally, his non-appearance in tonight’s episode strongly suggests that he has, in fact, left the show.
But when one door opens….
As Dwayne steps back from the limelight and young, promising Officer Benjamin Brice meets an untimely end, it feels like fresh blood is needed to shake up our force. I can’t help but wonder who will step forward next and take on this challenge.
But who will the mystery figure be? And what will they bring to the table?
