Horizon 3 Delayed as Key Narrative Director Leaves Guerrilla Games

The latest industry update isn’t promising for Horizon series enthusiasts on PS5. Guerrilla Games initially introduced the Horizon universe in 2017 with Horizon: Zero Dawn, followed by Horizon: Forbidden West in 2022. Fans are currently excited about the upcoming third installment, projected to launch around 2027 based on the time gap between the previous games. However, it’s uncertain whether this game will be exclusive to PS5 or PS6. If it comes out around 2027 or 2028, there’s a possibility that it could appear on both platforms. What is clear though, is that a vital character won’t be part of the new game.

John Gonzalez has played a significant role in the development of Horizon and its overall direction since its inception. Although he’s widely recognized as the author of Fallout: New Vegas, his actual position was that of narrative director for both Horizon games. He was primarily responsible for shaping the game’s lore. He has been a crucial element in the series, but he parted ways with Guerrilla Games in 2020.

Initially, he was at Smilegate Barcelona, then shifted to Fantastic Pixel Castle. His tenure at the latter ended in October 2024, but there might be a chance for him to return to PlayStation later on. Such transitions are not uncommon in the game development industry. However, his new role as Creative Director at Obsidian Entertainment starting this week suggests that the Horizon series will have to carry on without him for the time being.

If you’re fond of the storyline and background of the series, it’s unfortunate to learn that there’s no current plan for Gonzalez to rejoin.

Regarding Horizon 3, there’s currently no official announcement, but it’s speculated that it’s being worked on behind the scenes. It’s safe to say that we won’t see it for a few more years.
