As a die-hard fan of Obsidian Entertainment’s acclaimed 2010 gem, Fallout: New Vegas – frequently hailed as one of the greatest RPGs ever made – I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement learning that John Gonzalez, the game’s mastermind writer and creative leader, has rejoined the Xbox Game Studios team after a 14-year absence.
Information obtained from Gonzalez’s LinkedIn profile suggests that he has returned to Obsidian, taking up the role of Creative Director once more. In his own words, he expressed enthusiasm about being back for “promising times,” without disclosing any specific projects he is currently involved in.
It seems reasonable to assume that he might be developing a Fallout sequel to New Vegas, but contrary to popular belief, Gonzalez clarified that it isn’t the case; he explicitly said, “No, it’s not FNV2.” However, given his past experience with single-player RPGs at Obsidian Entertainment, it’s plausible that he is involved in an upcoming project from this developer.
Besides heading the main story in Fallout: New Vegas, Gonzalez also served as the chief narrative designer for Monolith Productions’ 2014 action role-playing game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and held the position of narrative director for Guerilla Games’ open-world games Horizon: Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West. He also lent his talents to Outrage Entertainment’s 2003 adventure title Alter Echo, an unfinished Rubu Tribe action game, Ubisoft’s 2008 strategy game Tom Clancy’s EndWar, and the team at Fantastic Pixel Castle.
