Gears of War Trilogy Remastered Reportedly Coming to PS5

It appears that another major Xbox series, specifically Gears of War, is joining the PS5 lineup, reflecting a shift in the gaming industry over the past decade and a half. In the era of Xbox 360 and PS3, exclusive games significantly influenced the choice of platform. PlayStation boasted titles like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Killzone, while Xbox offered Halo, Gears of War, Forza, and more. Essentially, gamers chose their platform based on the types of games they desired, thereby establishing unique identities for both consoles.

During the Xbox One era, Xbox took some significant steps, including making “Rise of the Tomb Raider” a timed exclusive, while PlayStation focused on its established developers and series. Additionally, it acquired exclusive rights to Insomniac Games’ popular Spider-Man games, boosting PlayStation’s popularity even further in the mainstream market. However, this generation saw a change as Xbox started exploring the option of releasing its games on PC. Titles such as “Quantum Break,” “Halo: The Master Chief Collection,” and others were ported to PC, sparking debate among console players who felt they had less incentive to own an Xbox due to the availability of these games on another platform.

Currently, the gaming landscape is experiencing quite a shift since Xbox is bringing several of its exclusive titles to the PlayStation 5 (PS5). This week, it was officially announced that “Forza Horizon 5” will arrive on PS5 in the spring. Interestingly, this isn’t the only Xbox-exclusive game slated for release on PS5 in the spring; “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is also scheduled to hit PS5 then. Furthermore, it seems that “Starfield” might join the lineup on PS5 in the not-too-distant future as well. This strategic move by Xbox to make its games accessible to a wider audience is garnering appreciation from PlayStation gamers.

The Gears of War Trilogy Is Reportedly Coming to PS5

A trusted source within the Spanish gaming community, known as eXtas1s, who has accurately leaked Xbox game porting in the past, suggests that a compilation of Gears of War titles is being developed. This collection is rumored to remaster Gears of War, Gears of War 2, and Gears of War 3, enabling players on PC, PS5, and Xbox platforms to enjoy these games. If this turns out to be true, it would mark the first time all three games are accessible on platforms other than Xbox. Previously, only the first game, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, was remastered and made available for PC, leaving the other two games unavailable for a significant period.

The source further reveals that the Gears of War compilation includes a cross-play feature, implying Xbox and PlayStation 5 users can engage in multiplayer/cooperative gameplay together. At this point, whether multiplayer is indeed part of the collection remains uncertain, but it could potentially follow a design similar to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, combining all maps, weapons, and more into a single multiplayer mode. Earlier speculation suggested that only Gears of War: Ultimate Edition would be ported to PlayStation 5; however, it now seems the entire trilogy might be involved.

Apart from the rumored Xbox collection for PS5, there are also whispers that “Halo: The Master Chief Collection” may appear on PS5 and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 this year. It’s anticipated that Xbox will be one of the major publishers on the Nintendo Switch 2 at launch due to reports suggesting they plan to transfer numerous games over during the year. At the moment, it’s uncertain if the Gears of War collection will also make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2, but it seems likely that this is part of Xbox’s broader strategy to expand its franchises across multiple platforms.

It’s quite probable that we’ll get updates about the Gears of War remaster within the next few seasons, which could be spring or summer. This announcement might line up with Xbox revealing their second half of 2025, as they have an impressive lineup for the first five months with games like Doom: The Dark Ages. With all these rumors swirling around, it’s expected that there will be more announcements to follow. Additionally, it’s plausible that this could coincide with the launch of Gears of War: E-Day, a new prequel focusing on Marcus and Dom during a pivotal event in the Gears of War universe.
