Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Adds Another Former Marvel Star to Its Cast

Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey” is expanding its talented cast, with Bill Irwin, recognized for his role in “Legion,” now part of the lineup alongside Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, and Samantha Morton. This recent casting news further strengthens ties to the Marvel universe as Irwin, a former character from “Legion” on FX, joins Elliot Page who previously played Kitty Pryde in “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” (Source: The Hollywood Reporter)

This event brings together several cast members for a reunion with Nolan once more. Patel has collaborated with the director on Tenet, Page was in Inception, and Irwin provided TARS’ voice in Interstellar. Interestingly, this is the first time two-time Oscar nominee Morton will be working alongside the esteemed filmmaker.

Filming is scheduled to commence approximately two months from now on Favignana Island, Sicily, often called “Goat Island,” a place believed to have been part of Odysseus’s ancient voyage. Afterward, filming will take place at further locations in Morocco and the UK, utilizing what’s referred to as cutting-edge IMAX technology for capturing footage.

Without any details about individual characters yet revealed, Tom Holland has been confirmed as the initial cast member in a movie Universal calls an “epic action tale based on mythology.” This upcoming film will be an adaptation of Homer’s timeless poem, recounting Odysseus’s harrowing ten-year journey back home after the Trojan War, filled with meetings with legendary monsters and divine entities.

The fresh faces are set to bolster an existing stellar cast, which currently features Matt Damon, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Benny Safdie. This film is slated for a theater release on July 17, 2026, continuing Christopher Nolan’s fortunate pattern of mid-July premieres that have proven successful in the past for movies such as The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer.

In this project, Nolan embarks on his initial exploration into classical mythology territory. This movie, considered by some as his most fantastical yet, is expected to visually represent iconic figures from myth such as Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the sorceress Circe.

During his interview on Good Morning America, Holland shared his enthusiasm about being part of the project, saying, “When the chance arose, it was like receiving the call of a lifetime – similar to hearing about Spider-Man a decade ago. It’s an incredible event for me, and I couldn’t be more thrilled and proud.

It’s been proposed that Holland may take on the role of either Odysseus himself or perhaps his son, Telemachus. Some speculate that Damon could be cast as an older Odysseus or even portray Telemachus’s father in the production.
