In the 1970s, two filmmakers, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, significantly transformed the movie industry through their groundbreaking blockbusters. In 1975, audiences were captivated by what might be considered the first-ever blockbuster – Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. Two years later, George Lucas’ Star Wars made its debut in theaters, pushing the idea of a blockbuster to new heights. These two visionaries not only reshaped Hollywood but also formed a close bond and collaborative partnership. This collaboration eventually led them to work together on the Indiana Jones series, with Lucas responsible for the storyline of the first two films and Spielberg directing the first four.
Due to their joint efforts, along with Harrison Ford playing significant roles in both franchises, it’s not surprising that many Star Wars references (or “Easter eggs”) can be found in the Indiana Jones movies.
Steven Spielberg References George Lucas’ Star Wars Franchise Several Times In Indiana Jones
The most obvious Easter egg is found in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” which serves as a gentle precursor to “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” In the initial scene, Indiana Jones, Willie Scott, and Short Round escape from a club named after Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker’s mentor from “Star Wars: A New Hope.
Instead of the Club Obi Wan in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom flaunting its Easter egg with large, bold, neon blue characters, there’s a subtler Star Wars reference hidden within Raiders of the Lost Ark. As Indiana Jones and Sallah unearth the Ark of the Covenant, one of the hieroglyphics in the Well of Souls bears an uncanny resemblance to C-3PO and R2-D2.
In addition to other elements, there’s a fun Easter egg in the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This comes when Indiana Jones says the well-known Star Wars phrase, “I have a bad feeling about this.” This line has been a recurring joke throughout the series, showing up in every cinematic installment. However, films like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Last Jedi have slightly altered its usage. Since Harrison Ford plays both Indiana Jones and Han Solo, it’s fitting that he delivers this line as an older Dr. Jones, many years after first saying it.
George Lucas Gave One Steven Spielberg Film a Cameo in Star Wars
In the Indiana Jones movies isn’t the only place where Spielberg pays tribute to his friend’s famous series. As a matter of fact, one of the earliest Star Wars references in a Spielberg film is found in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” released in 1977 – the same year as “A New Hope.” Towards the end of the alien spaceship, you can spot R2-D2 hanging from its exterior.
In a nod to the 1980 film “The Empire Strikes Back”, which was released two years before, Spielberg’s 1982 blockbuster “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” subtly paid homage to it. The character Yoda, who appeared in “Empire” as Luke Skywalker’s next mentor and is instantly recognizable with his distinct, enduring appearance, was a key figure. This unique look of Yoda has been the inspiration for numerous merchandise items and costume options.
In the realm of film classics, even _E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial_ isn’t exempt from the charm of cosplay. As a kid, I once donned a Yoda costume for Halloween, and it struck a chord with our intergalactic friend, E.T. The resemblance between the diminutive, wrinkly Yoda and E.T. was uncanny, and in that moment, I unwittingly sparked a glimmer of hope within him. After all, E.T.’s longing to return home was palpable, and seeing a fellow alien-like creature revived his spirits, if only for a brief instant.
In the years following “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” Lucas paid tribute to Spielberg’s work by incorporating references to E.T.’s world within his own Star Wars universe. For instance, in “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” various alien species that make up the Galactic Senate seem reminiscent of those from E.T.’s planet. Given the numerous Star Wars references sprinkled throughout Spielberg’s films, it comes as no surprise that Lucas would reciprocate this friendly gesture later on.
