Squid Game, the highly popular series, is set to return this summer with its third and concluding season, yet the creator hinted at potential future installments under certain conditions. The Korean drama has gained immense popularity on Netflix, shocking many as it swiftly dominated global audiences just as rapidly as it emerged. It wasn’t only the first season that was successful, but Season 2 has proven to be even more popular since its release in December. However, the end is near for this captivating tale.
Although Squid Game may conclude Seung Gi-Hun’s tale in Season 3 this Summer, the original creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hasn’t definitively closed the door on further story development. However, a potential continuation might take a different direction, focusing on a new character’s journey rather than more of Gi-Hun’s story. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang hinted at the possibility of a spinoff series in the future.
Could Squid Game Get a Spinoff?
Initially, Squid Game’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk didn’t plan for a Season 2 when the first season concluded. However, as the final season approaches, he revealed that the plot for Season 2 expanded into two parts spanning over two seasons to wrap up the story. During the creation of Season 1, Hwang had mentioned there wouldn’t be another season, but in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he expressed that there might be opportunities to introduce new characters and stories within this universe at a later time.
However, an important point to note is that the original creator might develop a new character or plot within the same universe, which could potentially lead to a spinoff. As Hwang put it, “If the opportunity arises and I manage to create a new character or story, there could be a possibility of a return.” Nevertheless, he seems to be more inclined towards the idea of a spinoff rather than revisiting the original series. Interestingly, in previous interviews, Hwang has made it clear that Netflix intends to continue the Squid Game franchise even if he is not at the forefront of it.
Squid Game Is Going to Continue Either Way
In a conversation with The Wrap after the premiere of Squid Game Season 2, Hwang indicated that Netflix has plans to continue the Squid Game series. He suggested there might be opportunities for him in future projects as an advisor or co-creator. However, he didn’t confirm if Season 3 would be the last; instead, he hinted at a broader Squid Game universe. Already, an American adaptation of the series with David Fincher is being developed, and a reality competition spin-off, titled Squid Game: The Challenge, is also in the works.
Instead, fans might anticipate a faithful continuation of the Squid Game universe from its originator, given how the storyline wraps up in Season 3. If Gi-Hun’s journey concludes on a note that leaves room for more, there could be further aspects of this world to uncover. However, we won’t know for sure until June 27th when Squid Game Season 3 makes its grand finale on Netflix. Following the end of the series, fans can expect to delve deeper into potential future developments with a clearer understanding of what lies ahead.
