As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Simu Liu’s “Sleeping Dogs” movie project seems to be progressing more swiftly than anticipated! For those who remember, “Sleeping Dogs” was an iconic video game from the era of open-world crime games that flourished after Grand Theft Auto’s major success. It’s no secret that creating such games is costly and time-consuming, which may explain why we haven’t seen many new ones lately. However, “Sleeping Dogs” stood out among the few that dared to enter this genre, offering a truly distinctive perspective on open-world crime games.
Initially, a True Crime-style game similar to GTA, owned by Activision, was under development, later known as Sleeping Dogs after its transformation by Square Enix. The game received acclaim for its captivating gameplay, gripping storyline, and well-developed characters, but fell short of Square Enix’s sales expectations. At the time, the company had lofty predictions for many of its games, with Sleeping Dogs among those that didn’t meet these targets, such as 2013’s Tomb Raider which sold nearly 4 million copies within a month. Regrettably, a sequel to Sleeping Dogs was planned but ultimately canceled, leading to the closure of developer United Front Games.
For quite some time, the project based on the video game “Sleeping Dogs” remained inactive. However, there was an initiative to create a movie featuring Donnie Yen. Unfortunately, this film stalled during development for numerous years, with even Donnie Yen investing his personal funds to progress it. Regardless, the project never advanced into full production or came to fruition. In time, it ultimately disappeared. Now, actor Simu Liu has expressed his intent to revive the “Sleeping Dogs” movie and is actively seeking a contract with the rights owners. This week, he openly discussed his passion for the game, expressing deep affection for it and even sharing potential casting choices from his wish list.
Sleeping Dogs Movie Starring Simu Liu Is in Active Development
It may have appeared as though Liu was only beginning to work on the Sleeping Dogs movie, but that’s actually not accurate. According to IGN, Simu Liu’s Sleeping Dogs film is officially in production and under active development. Liu will portray Wei Shen, the primary character of Sleeping Dogs who serves as an undercover cop infiltrating a triad group. A writer and notable director are involved to bring it to life, although no specific names have been mentioned yet. Furthermore, Sleeping Dogs is being produced by Story Kitchen, a production company known for adapting video games such as It Takes Two, Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, among others.
Currently, there’s no scheduled release date for the movie “Sleeping Dogs”, nor any hint as to when production might start. It seems that filming won’t begin soon, but at least it’s not an unrealistic idea. Fans are optimistic that a successful “Sleeping Dogs” movie could potentially pave the way for a sequel to the game. However, many events need to fall into place before this becomes a reality. For now, we can only wait and hope for updates.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, Simu Liu is perfectly suited for the role of Wei Shen. Frankly, with no word on when Shang-Chi 2 might drop, it’s fantastic that he’s snagged another action franchise. You see, since his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, he’s mostly been in comedies like Barbie and supporting roles. But hey, there’s a good chance we’ll see him in the upcoming Avengers movies – though that’s still up in the air for now.
