Reese Witherspoon Offers Update on Legally Blonde Series (And Fans Will Be Excited)

First, Elle Woods faced the challenge of high school before making it at Harvard Law. Now, we’ll get a glimpse into her journey as Reese Witherspoon shares behind-the-scenes details about casting for the upcoming prequel series ‘Elle’, airing on Prime Video. During a chat on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, Witherspoon, who played Elle in the 2001 original and its 2003 sequel, disclosed that she’s currently going through audition videos to find the perfect actress to play young Elle Woods. The series, inspired by Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’, will delve into Elle’s formative years during the 1990s.

As Witherspoon shared with Fallon, things have changed significantly since they used to physically audition in casting offices. Now, they produce and film their own auditions, complete with costumes, set designs, and even mini-movies. She finds it astonishing! The actress admires the talent pool, commenting that the auditions are so impressive, making the choice for the final selection a truly tough call.

The pace of the show’s progress picked up significantly following Amazon Studios purchasing MGM’s collection in March 2022. Notably, Laura Kittrell, who has previously worked on Insecure and Black Monday, will serve as executive producer alongside Reese Witherspoon through her Hello Sunshine label. The goal is to delve into the life events that molded Elle into the beloved iconic young woman we recognize.

I recently caught the Wednesday Addams series and found myself remarking, ‘Wow, even in high school she was captivating!’ It was a treat to watch each episode. Reese Witherspoon expressed her motivation for the prequel, mentioning, ‘Just as I was intrigued by who Wednesday was before, I wanted to explore Elle Woods’ roots – who she was prior to college and law school.’ I couldn’t agree more!

Originally based on Amanda Brown’s novel, Legally Blonde transformed into a cultural sensation, earning over $140 million globally and leading to a sequel, a spinoff, and a hit Broadway musical. The series chronicles the unexpected journey of Elle Woods, a stylish sorority leader who surprises everyone by enrolling in Harvard Law School following a heartbreaking split.

Although the long-awaited Legally Blonde 3 is still in development with Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor as writers, this prequel series offers a new take on the cherished character. As Witherspoon excitedly announced on Instagram, “Before she became the most renowned Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law, she was just an ordinary ’90s high school girl. And all of you will have the chance to get to know her better…

The show will only be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, but as of now, the release date remains undisclosed. This production is part of Amazon MGM Studios’ ongoing effort to create fresh content from their recent acquisitions, which could potentially lead to series based on franchises such as Barbershop, RoboCop, and Pink Panther.
