Batman’s Absence From The Penguin Explained By Showrunner

Last year on HBO, The Penguin series demonstrated it was just as captivating as its film counterpart, The Batman. Although the film offered more action, The Penguin delved deeper into the iconic villain and Gotham City’s criminal world, pushing Matt Reeves’ franchise further into darker territories. Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the title character served as a link between the movie and the series, yet many fans expressed disappointment that Robert Pattinson’s Batman didn’t appear too.

Given the chaotic situation in sprawling Gotham City, where a brutal gang war among the dominant crime families has erupted, some fans pondered why Batman didn’t intervene. However, according to showrunner Lauren Lefranc, the explanation is straightforward: Bruce Wayne is just one individual trying to maintain order in such a vast city.

LeFranc shared with Empire Magazine that Matt emphasized to him right from the start that the city is vast, and it’s impossible for Batman to be present everywhere. He may not have a Spider-Man’s sixth sense, but just because we don’t observe Batman in our series doesn’t imply he’s oblivious or indifferent.

According to Lefranc’s statement, it was Reeves’ decision not to feature Batman in “The Penguin” because Batman is preoccupied with addressing various crises in Gotham City following the events of “The Batman”. The city has been plunged into chaos due to the Riddler’s actions, which have resulted in destroyed bridges, widespread flooding, and an ongoing threat to the safety of citizens. With so much happening that requires Batman’s immediate attention, it seems logical for him to be occupied elsewhere.

It appears as though Batman may have allowed Penguin to carry out his own tasks, with Bruce Wayne perhaps having knowledge of some aspects of the situation. By allowing events to unfold, while focusing on matters that would benefit Gotham City’s citizens directly, he enabled criminal organizations to weaken and even destroy each other. Now, there remains only one crime lord in Gotham, and Batman has a long history of dealing with the Penguin.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that every single event unfolded in this epic production will undeniably shape the narrative of “The Batman Part II,” set to grace our screens on October 1, 2027.

According to Lefranc’s confirmation, the happenings in Gotham City and the consequences they bring will continue into the upcoming movie.

All episodes of The Penguin are available to stream on Max.
