It appears a timely remake of a beloved Nintendo 64 game could potentially launch on PlayStation 5 and the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, based on a recent job posting. First announced in 2020 during The Game Awards, Perfect Dark, a cooperative project between The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, aims to modernize the classic Rare first-person shooter (FPS) with a fresh narrative and enhanced gameplay mechanics. Although initially slated as an Xbox exclusive due to being published by Xbox Game Studios upon its release, a recently posted job listing suggests that the exclusivity may not persist for much longer, if at all.
As stated in The Initiative’s job posting, they are looking for a skilled Principal Graphics Engineer. This role involves improving and maintaining the scalability of rendering features to support various platforms and quality settings, as well as having experience with multi-platform development. While this could potentially mean porting a game like Perfect Dark to PC, the broad scope of multi-platform development suggests that they may be expanding their reach to other brands such as PlayStation and possibly Nintendo as well.
The job posting for a possible new game titled “Perfect Dark” was shared on X/Twitter by a reliable source known as Xbox leaker extas1s, who has previously hinted at other Xbox adaptations such as Gears of War and the recently confirmed Forza Horizon 5. Although it doesn’t necessarily mean that the game is being leaked, it does support many speculations about Xbox potentially losing exclusive rights to it.
Despite rumors suggesting that Brian Horton from Insomniac Games left Marvel’s Wolverine project to work on Perfect Dark, we are unsure of its development stage, so it could still be an exclusive title for Xbox, although it may follow the timed exclusivity model like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Hi-Fi Rush.
Perfect Dark Revival Could Be Headed to Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5
After a prolonged period of development issues, including Embracer Group’s acquisition of Crystal Dynamics and subsequent layoffs, the long-awaited reboot of Perfect Dark was unveiled last year at the Xbox Games Showcase. In a three-and-a-half-minute video, we were treated to a blend of stealth and action gameplay set in a visually stunning environment, along with some intriguing abilities for protagonist Joanna Dark. Although the narrative wasn’t fully revealed, it appears that the game will maintain the evil corporation theme from previous titles, suggesting that Joanna will be delving into a complex conspiracy once more.
The “Perfect Dark” series, beginning in 2000 and lasting until 2010 with the remaster on Xbox 360, was one of Rare’s famous franchises back then. This first-person spy shooting game, initially launched for Nintendo 64, was widely appreciated by critics due to its resemblance to its spiritual predecessor, “GoldenEye 007.” Although the sequel on Xbox 360, “Perfect Dark Zero,” didn’t achieve the same level of success as its original, it still garnered positive reviews for its replay value and multiplayer features. With a new revival on the horizon, the opportunity for redemption has become more extensive than initially anticipated.
At the moment, there’s no fixed release date for the game “Perfect Dark”. For updates on everything related to Xbox and the world of gaming, stay tuned right here at ComicBook.
