This week on Call the Midwife, we had Cyril back in action, having recently journeyed to Jamaica to reconnect with his estranged spouse Lucille. This unexpected trip has cast a shadow over his budding relationship with Rosalind.
But he’s now back in Poplar, with some very important and deeply sad news.
He confessed to Mrs. Wallace that Lucille had requested a divorce from him. She prefers not to go back to London, while he isn’t keen on living in Jamaica.
Fans of the drama have been deeply engaged in their relationship, from their initial date in season 8 through their wedding in the 2021 Christmas special and beyond, hoping for their success and rooting for them every step of the way.
However, various circumstances such as a miscarriage played a role, causing Lucille to extend her planned short trip to the Caribbean, where she sought respite to address her personal matters.
To Cyril’s great shock, instead of leaving as he had expected, she chose to prolong her visit and found employment at a maternity hospital. This move hinted at the approaching dissolution of their marriage.
And that has now been confirmed.
“Is there not a compromise you can reach?” asked Mrs Wallace.
“I’m afraid not,” he responded flatly.
Contrary to earlier statements by Leonie Elliott expressing a desire to return, it is now confirmed that the relationship between Lucille and Cyril has ended.
Cyril had worries that his upcoming divorce might hinder his position as a pastor, but Mrs. Wallace swiftly addressed and dismissed this concern.
She suggested, “Don’t fret over others determining what is right or wrong for you. Instead, trust your own judgment and act according to what feels right within you.
But will his heart now look to Rosalind?
Upon his homecoming, I was eager to reconnect with him, but alas, he found himself swamped with commitments and decided against joining me in our volunteer work at the local homeless shelter.
however, as Poplar prepared for its unique Commonwealth Games near the conclusion of the episode, they drew closer once more. It was then that Rosalind shared her feelings with him for the very first time.
She confessed to Joyce that she had thought, maybe if we reduced our time spent together, my emotions might fade away, especially if he traveled to the opposite end of the globe.
“But unfortunately, him going to the other side of the world only seems to have made matters worse
“I don’t know what do.”
It’s already been confirmed that the pair will continue to explore their feelings for one another.
He then went on to tease “hard times ahead”.
In my recollection, I once conversed with a fellow on the filming location, who shared their experience of being in an interracial relationship during the 1970s. They spoke about the challenges they faced, explaining that expressing affection openly or playfully was nearly impossible back then.
They’ve had a minor argument with some street-dwellers. This is just the beginning, and I’m certain things will become more challenging for them as time goes on.
However, might preconceived notions halt progress before it begins? Or could Cyril’s recent divorce and position as a clergyman potentially cause difficulties in the future?
