Throughout his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Daredevil has donned numerous distinct costumes. Initially, Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) appeared as The Man Without Fear on Netflix’s Daredevil, a series that spanned three seasons and also featured Matt in The Defenders, a joint series with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist. After the cancellation of all Marvel-Netflix shows in 2018, Matt took a three-year break before making a brief reappearance in a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, paving the way for his return to the MCU.
After that point, Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, has made appearances on Marvel’s Disney+ shows like “She-Hulk” and “Echo”. His upcoming series, the much-awaited “Daredevil: Born Again”, is set to premiere on the platform on March 4th. Throughout this period, Murdock has often switched suits for each new storyline, and there will be some fresh designs in “Born Again”. Here’s a look at every suit Matt Murdock’s Daredevil has worn in the MCU.
Matt’s Ninja Suit – Daredevil Seasons 1 & 3
Matt Murdock kicked off his crime-fighting journey in Hell’s Kitchen during Season 1 of Daredevil. At this stage, Daredevil was still honing his skills as a vigilante, predominantly relying on his martial arts abilities and enhanced senses to carry out justice. Given this phase of his career, the black ninja suit that concealed his eyes was fitting. Additionally, it served as a nostalgic reference to Daredevil’s past, with similar ninja suits appearing in Rex Smith’s portrayal of Daredevil in the 1989 TV movie “The Trial of the Incredible Hulk” and in comic books.
In Season 3 of Daredevil, Matt reappeared wearing the ninja suit again. This change was largely symbolic, as Matt at the start of the season was a battered and disillusioned character. The switch from his red, horned suit to the ninja suit mirrors Matt’s troubled psychological condition throughout Season 3, particularly his struggle with deciding whether or not to execute the Kingpin. Matt himself explains his decision to leave the red suit behind by stating, “I’ve moved beyond what it represented,” although he eventually re-adopts it.
The Red Daredevil Suit – Daredevil Season 1
In the final episode of “Daredevil” Season 1, the iconic horned costume is unveiled, fittingly named after the series itself. Throughout most of the season, Matt Murdock engages in crime-fighting primarily while wearing a ninja suit. However, it’s only in the climax that he adopts his personally crafted red suit, featuring a horned cowl, made from cut-resistant material and equipped with a belt and holster for his combat sticks.
In the early stages of Season 2, Matt’s original Daredevil suit continues to appear. This is seen during Matt’s initial encounter with Frank Castle, better known as The Punisher, portrayed by Jon Bernthal. Although Matt’s helmet successfully protects his head from bullets fired by Frank, a significant crack in it convinces Matt that an upgrade for the suit is necessary.
Daredevil’s Updated Red Suit – Daredevil Season 2, The Defenders, & Echo
In Daredevil Season 2, Matt receives an updated version of his suit, which he later dons in combat alongside Luke Cage (played by Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) in The Defenders. The fundamental structure of the suit remains largely untouched, with the primary modification being to Matt’s mask. This revamped mask now offers enhanced protection against bullets, and it emits a more vivid shade of red compared to its previous version.
In the series Echo, Matt’s Daredevil costume was reimagined based on his role, maintaining a similar appearance, yet Richie Palmer, the producer, referred to it as a fresh take on the Netflix suit. Throughout his career fighting crime in Hell’s Kitchen, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock has worn the classic Daredevil suit most often, including the ninja-style version.
Daredevil’s Yellow Suit – She-Hulk
In the comics, Daredevil didn’t start off wearing his iconic red horned suit. Instead, he wore a red vest, gloves, and boots with a bright yellow body suit. For the first time ever in live-action, Matt Murdock (Daredevil) will wear the yellow suit in Disney+’s She-Hulk series.
Matt’s costume in “She-Hulk” closely resembles that of its comic book version. It appears to be a modified take on the updated red suit from “Daredevil” Season 2, with the cowl and other parts changed to yellow to match. Although it wasn’t designed for Daredevil’s return in the MCU, the inclusion of the yellow suit in “She-Hulk” offered some enjoyable Easter eggs for comic book enthusiasts.
Daredevil’s Third Red Suit – Daredevil: Born Again
Matt Murdock, who’s taking charge again in “Daredevil: Born Again” (essentially Daredevil Season 4), will put on his iconic red suit and horns once more to face off against Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin and the returning character Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). However, the new version of Matt’s suit in “Born Again” has undergone some changes compared to its earlier appearances on Daredevil and The Defenders. In this updated suit, the red color seems significantly brighter than before, while the black trimming around the torso has been switched out for a red equivalent.
Furthermore, it appears that the redesigned suit in “Born Again” has a tighter fit, accentuating Matt Murdock’s upper body like many superhero costumes in films and TV shows. This updated suit also includes a collar around the neck and a textured cowl. In summary, Daredevil’s fresh red suit incorporates minor changes but remains effective for his duties.
Are There More Daredevil Suits?
As a film enthusiast, I’m excitedly anticipating Matt’s updated red suit for the upcoming series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” A glimpse from the trailer hints that the show might delve into multiple iterations of his suit. Intriguingly, there’s a scene where Matt is gazing at an array of Daredevil masks, which includes not one, but two versions of his classic red getup, and the striking yellow cowl from “She-Hulk.” Moreover, a silver and black version of the Daredevil mask are also spotted, with the black one positioned beside the yellow one.
Two cowls, one silver and one black, hint at possible variations of Matt Murdock’s horned costume in the upcoming series ‘Born Again’. The silver cowl could be a general prototype for creating new Daredevil masks. However, the black cowl is particularly interesting because it resembles the one from the ‘Shadowland’ comics, which features a predominantly black suit with red accents like gloves, boots, eye lenses, and a red Daredevil emblem on the chest. This could foreshadow Matt wearing his Shadowland suit in Born Again, or suggest that Born Again Season 2 might adapt the Shadowland storyline. Regardless, it appears that Matt Murdock’s crime-fighting attire will expand further in Daredevil: Born Again.
You can find the superheroes Daredevil, She-Hulk, and Echo streaming online on Disney+. The much-anticipated release of “Daredevil: Born Again” is set for Disney+ on March 4th.
