In the climactic moments of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” (2011), Severus Snape, portrayed by Alan Rickman, utters his final words to Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, with a heavy heart: “You have your mother’s eyes.” As the Dark Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) slashes Snape’s throat and unleashes Nagini upon him, Snape pleads for Harry to gather his tears, place them in the Pensieve, and delve into Lily Potter’s memories. With a lingering gaze at Lily’s eyes one last time, Severus Snape breathes his last, hopeful that these revelations will absolve him in Harry’s mind.
The death of Snape in the story is a poignant moment for his character, mirroring the portrayal in J.K. Rowling’s 2007 novel. However, according to Alan Rickman’s posthumously published diaries titled “Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries“, director David Yates proposed that Voldemort should use the Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra) on Snape. This spell quickly eliminates its targets with a brilliant green flash, thereby hindering Snape’s emotional goodbye with Harry in his final moments. It is also worth noting that Voldemort, who mistakenly believed Snape to be the master of the Elder Wand, wouldn’t have cast such a spell for fear it would rebound on him.
On November 25, 2009, as recorded in Rickman’s diary, he discusses filming Snape’s death scene: “The set was chilly, damp, and drafty, but the crew seemed distant, allowing Ralph and me to concentrate on moving forward with the scene. David [Yates] remains adamant that Voldemort should kill me with a spell. (This idea is hard to grasp, especially considering the furious response it would likely provoke from readers.) It was a pleasure working with Ralph, though. He was straightforward, sincere, creative, and independent.” Rickman’s wife, Rima, later noted that “He can’t kill you with a spell — the only one that would do that is Avada Kedavra, and it kills instantly — you wouldn’t be able to finish the scene.
Upon discovering the discussion about a potential change in the Harry Potter subreddit on Reddit, fans vocalized their mix of annoyance and comfort, as they learned that this adjustment was even contemplated.
“Fortunately, Alan stood firm against Yates’ irrational changes that could have spoiled the genuine scene,” one person posted. “That’s ridiculous,” a highly-rated comment replied. “But how else would Harry obtain Snape’s memories to reveal the truth if Voldemort had immediately killed him?”
Another response read, “It would have deprived viewers of the only heartfelt scene between Harry and Snape that felt authentic.” One user commented, “One has to ponder how many other actors had to resist making unwise decisions that strayed from the books on different matters.
Ultimately, the situation unfolds exactly as planned by screenwriter Steve Kloves: “Harry scrutinizes Snape’s expression, attempting to understand his speech. Snape gazes at Harry in amazement, seemingly entranced by his gaze, then his eyes widen, his words fading away. Snape’s face loses tension.
In his journal entry dated November 26, 2009, Rickman commented, “The Scene of Snape’s Death. Almost a decade has passed. At least now it’s only two actors left… David shows a tender and appealing enthusiasm in this scene. And he certainly does here. This moment perfectly illustrates the magic that can occur when actors take a scripted scene and collaborate with the story, the stage, and each other.
