Previously at Sony, Shawn Layden – known for openly expressing opinions about past rival Xbox – believes that if Microsoft were to abandon console production, it could transform into a versatile industry leader much like Sega, boasting a strong multi-platform presence.
In a frequently referenced podcast interview, Layden recently discussed Microsoft’s approach in an increasingly expensive development environment: “A multi-platform strategy, given the escalating costs of development, is crucial. This tactic complicates the conversation and fosters FOMO (fear of missing out), making people feel they need to be on your platform to avoid missing out. However, if your product is available across all platforms, that specific marketing ploy becomes less effective.
The strategy Microsoft seems to be adopting for Xbox isn’t entirely new: “There are examples of this from the past. I was part of the industry when Sega moved their Dreamcast games onto PS2. Over time, Sega evolved into a software-only company, undergoing a significant change, so there is a historical precedent for it.”
