Round Up: Civilization 7 Reviews Are Glowing Ahead of PS5 Launch

VGC – 5/5

In a daring move, Civilization VII introduces substantial alterations to its established formula while preserving elements that have defined the series. Bid farewell to your spare hours, for whether on PC or handheld devices, you’ll find yourself engrossed in the gameplay loop of “One More Turn,” consuming every waking moment.

TheGamer – 4.5/5

This game is addictive, swallowing your time mercilessly and leaving you exhausted and deprived of sleep. I’m excited to dive into its multiplayer mode soon, having been immersed in the single-player for a while now that isn’t fully polished yet. I’m eager to spend countless hours devising distinct strategies for each leader and civilization. I can hardly wait to conquer the Deity AI using a victory method other than military superiority, which remains the easiest path to victory. By the way, the Mongolian theme tune is the best Civilization music we’ve heard so far.

Windows Central – 4.5/5

The major updates in Civilization 7 improve the game speed during the middle and late stages, declutter the map, and offer more strategic possibilities than ever before. The developers will likely adjust victory and unit balancing based on feedback and data, but overall, the game is currently in excellent condition (which is not common for AAA games).

Despite some issues with pricing and DLC, Civilization 7 is expected to remain an outstanding choice for world domination gaming experiences for many years.

GameSpot – 8/10

The “one more turn” feature in Sid Meier’s Civilization VII remains captivating, and I savored a significant part of my gaming sessions. Features like diplomacy, espionage, crises, and combat effectively address long-standing concerns. On the other hand, Legacy Paths and narrative events provide enticing paths for progress throughout the ages. Regrettably, despite improvements made over time, such as the switch from square tiles to hexes or the introduction of districts, the base Civilization VII experience could benefit from a few adjustments, particularly during critical era transitions. However, changes made to the series over the years have been generally positive, turning initial controversies and complexities into an enhanced overall experience. In essence, though Civilization VII has a robust foundation, its full potential might not be realized until later in its lifespan. But at least the franchise maintains consistency in this aspect.

TechRader – 4/5

In simpler terms, the seventh installment of Sid Meier’s Civilization series offers an exciting evolution with numerous captivating new features. The exchange of civilizations is effectively incorporated, ensuring matches don’t become monotonous due to distinct ages. However, it falls slightly short compared to its predecessors as some aspects like the repetitive Legacy Path system and basic diplomacy could use improvement.

VG247 – 4/5

Ultimately, everything falls into place – it’s simply not what we expected. There’s a hint of concession to ensure the game reaches a wide audience, but such compromises are acceptable if the outcome is successful. And it has been. I’m content. With approximately a thousand hours played across Civ 4, 5, and 6, I am eager to contribute hundreds more to that total with the seventh installment. Some of this additional time will be spent over the years as the game evolves and expands, which is typical for Civilization series. However, the key point is, the groundwork here is solid. The myth of one last desperate turn, repeated endlessly, remains unshaken.

IGN – 7/10

In Civilization 7, the attempt to streamline and simplify this renowned 4X game series seems overzealous, particularly in terms of its interface. The interface is disappointingly inadequate at supplying me with necessary information for playing effectively or even comprehending what’s happening sometimes. Despite this, it does offer enhanced warfare and diplomacy, a touch more narrative appeal, as well as primarily stunning visuals and sound, which give me reasons to continue clicking one more turn late into the night. It’s plausible that with Firaxis’s typical pace of patches and expansions, it can perfect its new concepts and reach its full potential. However, for now, what’s available is still enjoyable, but it’s also a larger step back for the series than we usually expect when a new era begins.

PCGamesN 7/10

Firaxis tries to combat the excessive complexity often found in the 4X genre with mixed results. The innovative concepts introduced in Civilization 7 operate smoothly, making the game tighter and more immersive than its previous versions. However, even though these enhancements are effective, the sense of involvement starts to dwindle during the mid-game.

Eurogamer – 2/5

Civilization 7 boasts a visually stunning and intricate design, with a soundtrack reminiscent of Colonization that I found quite appealing. The AI turns move at an incredibly swift pace, and its user interface shows promise for addressing some of my criticisms. Overall, the game’s mechanics are generally well-designed, and strategy enthusiasts who enjoy city optimization may find it particularly enjoyable. However, the game lacks depth in terms of character, and the frequency of annoying quirks and oversights, even for a series as esteemed as this one, is concerning. The end result is a game that feels uninspired and contradictory, failing to live up to its potential and leaving the 4X genre without a clear leader.
