Over the past ten years or so, Ryan Reynolds has largely become identified with the character of Deadpool. Starting from his debut as the Marvel hero in 2016, it seems like most aspects of Reynolds’ career have been centered around this wisecracking and fast-talking superhero. Even his roles outside of Marvel have taken on a more sarcastic and rapid-fire tone, drawing attention to Reynolds’ strengths as Deadpool. However, it’s easy for people to overlook the fact that Ryan Reynolds had an entire career prior to suiting up in red pants, a career filled with several notable films that have since faded into relative obscurity.
As a cinephile, I was thrilled to discover that “Definitely, Maybe” – a heartwarming romantic comedy now streaming on Netflix – features Ryan Reynolds delivering one of his finest, most sincere performances yet. In this film, Reynolds plays a dad who recounts the tale of how he met his daughter’s mother to her, with three significant women in his past playing crucial roles. The identity of the girl’s mom remains a mystery throughout the story, only to be revealed at the end.
In the movie titled “Definitely, Maybe“, Ryan Reynolds acts alongside Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks, and Isla Fisher. Each of these actresses portrays one of Reynolds’ love interests during the course of the plot. Abigail Breslin, a young talent, appears in the film as Reynolds’ daughter. “Definitely, Maybe” was both written and directed by Adam Brooks, who is known for his work on “Practical Magic“.
At the beginning of February, many films were announced as set to premiere on Netflix, but “Definitely, Maybe” wasn’t among them. Surprisingly, it made its way onto the streaming service over the weekend, offering a fresh viewing option for fans of Ryan Reynolds and those who enjoy romantic comedies.
Over the past few weeks, there have been more instances of unexpected movies suddenly appearing on Netflix than in the preceding months. At the tail end of December, a number of hit Warner Bros. films were added to Netflix, such as the Best Picture nominee “Dune Part Two”. This month has seen the arrivals of “Saturday Night” and “The Menu”, both without prior announcement or fanfare. Last week, Netflix welcomed the new Tom Hanks and Robin Wright collaboration from Robert Zemeckis titled “Here”.
Reynold’s acting journey has significantly transformed since the debut of “Definitely, Maybe” in 2008. A year following its release, he assumed a notably distinct role as Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”. Post “Deadpool”, however, Reynolds has soared to become one of the most prominent figures in the entertainment industry. The summer release of “Deadpool & Wolverine” holds the record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever.
