2025 is when Civilization 7 officially releases, with early access starting on February 5th. However, the review restrictions have been lifted, allowing you ample time until launch to decide if this game suits your preferences. With numerous updates like new age mechanics, military units, diplomacy options, and more, it’s crucial to understand what awaits you in this latest installment of Civilization 7.
6 hours post the game’s review restriction being lifted on Metacritic, Civilization 7 has an overall score of 81% from PC reviews, based on 67 critic opinions. This is slightly lower than my own 90% rating in my review of Civilization 7, but as I mentioned then, there would be a wide range of opinions. At this moment, console reviews are absent as it seems the game was exclusively provided early to PC gamers.

It came as no surprise that opinions on Civilization 7 vary widely among critics. Given the iconic status of this series, you’ll find hardcore fans resistant to change while others simply want an enjoyable gaming experience. I fall into the latter group, having played quite a bit of Civ 5 (and somewhat less of Civ 6). With this background in mind, I approached my Civilization 7 preview cautiously before delving into a full review.
It appears that while many reviewers felt the game was dull, perhaps due to improved mid- and late-game flow and strategic management, I found myself quite captivated by Civilization VII. I just can’t seem to put it down.
By examining reviews with comparable ratings to my Civilization 7 appraisal, I find that many people share my views. Although the game has some minor glitches, it seems poised for a long run of paid expansion packs. However, significant alterations to mechanics greatly enhance the series and make it feel more contemporary.
Here’s a quote from me that sums up my more than 50 hours (so far) with Civilization 7:
History Untold, Old World, and Humankind. Instead of simply updating the series, the developers aimed to innovate by learning successful methods in operating a 4X turn-based strategy game.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Civilization 7 is set to drop on my gaming devices starting February 11, 2025! This epic journey continues on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5/4, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and macOS. But the excitement doesn’t stop there – if you’re a Deluxe or Founders Edition owner, you’ll get early access from February 6! Can’t wait to embark on this new adventure with you all!
