Is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 Essential for Enjoying the Sequel?

Do you need to play Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 before 2?

Warhorse Studios, the developers behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, have crafted a narrative that welcomes newcomers to the series. However, playing the first game will enrich your understanding of the sequel’s plot, Henry’s pursuit for vengeance, and some of the other key characters in the storyline.

You don’t have to play Kingdom Come: Deliverance first …

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is an enormous open-world role-playing game with over 100 hours of main and side quest content. As suggested by its title, it doesn’t start Henry’s journey from scratch. Instead, the opening mission, which involves delivering a crucial letter to a neighboring fiefdom, continues directly where Warhorse’s original Kingdom Come RPG (released in 2018) ended. This initial game was also a lengthy 80-100 hour experience, leaving some newcomers to the medieval saga wondering if they need to play it before diving into the sequel.

For those choosing to jump straight into Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, they won’t be required to complete the first game if they prefer not to. The sequel’s narrative effectively summarizes key events from its predecessor within various cutscenes and dialogues. These recaps cover Henry’s hometown’s tragic sacking, his quest for revenge, and how he eventually joined lords supporting King Wenceslaus IV in the 1403 Bohemian civil war that serves as the game’s backdrop.

Warhorse Studios made a thoughtful decision in crafting the narrative for Kingdom Come 2, designed to be engaging for both returning fans and those just discovering Henry’s tale. As Tom McKay, the voice of Henry, mentioned during the game’s initial unveiling, “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a follow-up to Henry’s past escapades, but the narrative structure is crafted in a manner that makes it an ideal introduction for newcomers to Henry’s adventures.

… but doing so isn’t a bad idea by any means

You can enjoy Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 without initially playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance, but it would enhance your experience significantly. While Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 may provide enough context for newcomers, some of the nuances and deeper connections between characters like Henry, Hans Capon, and Istvan Toth might not be fully appreciated unless you’ve experienced their interactions in the first game.

Given the circumstances, I would strongly suggest trying Kingdom Come: Deliverance before moving on to the sequel if you’re open to delaying your experience. In my review of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, I mentioned that it surpasses its predecessor in my opinion, but even so, the original game is an outstanding RPG – undeniably one of the best from the 2010s. Moreover, there’s no better moment to play it, as it’s more stable than it was at launch and can currently be bought with all its DLC for just $6.89 on CDKeys.

If you’re eager to delve deeper into the initial part of Henry’s tale before proceeding to the follow-up, the story summary (available above) that Warhorse recently shared on their YouTube channel is highly recommended. Although it may not encompass every detail, it showcases crucial cinematic scenes and dialogues from the narrative for about 10 minutes.

The sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance, titled Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, will be released on February 4 for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (available through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG), and PS5. This game is highly acclaimed as one of the top Xbox games and top PC games of the year, making it a must-play for RPG enthusiasts. If you’re intrigued about the storyline it’s based on, I would suggest playing the original game (currently more affordable than ever due to CDKeys).
